By the looks of things it appears the face and facial features were done separately, or more specifically, someone set the eyes to profile or 3/4 view while the face was set to front view. If you look closely, you’ll see the eye is actually in the correct position for the side view and the gap appears to be to mark where the muzzle goes, however, the mane, eyebrow and muzzle were set to use their front view file instead for some reason.
