Not an excuse. The Lord of the Rings movies were made around the same time and there CGI is much better, and it Blends better with the Practical effects. Gollum looks much better than jar jar.
and you should see the video I linked, because it showed quite a few of the models they used that you probably didn’t even think were models, like the Naboo Cruiser
