Well it originated from “Grunge” fashion popularized by the punk rock movement of the 80’s and 90’s. Bands would typically wear whatever they were wearing at home all day, because many of them came from low-income neighborhoods and got most of their clothes from hand-me-downs or thrift stores. Even though their clothes were old, faded, worn or torn, they made the most of it and wore it as a symbol of authenticity, to show they cared more about their music than their looks (same reason they had such wild hair; they’d either cut it themselves or just let it grow to save on trips to the barber). Fans followed suit, and the grunge look was born.
 
Of course, once grunge became more popular, mainstream fashion companies decided to cash in on it by selling pre-faded, pre-torn jeans and other grunge-inspired clothes made from high-end fabrics to emulate the grunge look. Naturally, a lot of people criticized this because it completely went against the “unfashion” principles of the original grunge movement.

The worst part is when the factories pollute literally tons of water just to make the jeans look old.

That type of “fashion” was and is so stupid.
 
I will never understand how and why people thought and think that torn clothes was a good look for anything.
 
But those stupid people just went and ruined so many good pairs of jeans or other clothes for their stupid “fashion sense”.
