*Salina and Haven were originally Skystar’s sisters, but the writers for My Little Pony: The Movie (2017) decided Skystar’s character worked better, story-wise, as an only child.

That really didn’t stop writers from making Cranky and the Diamond Dogs into humans. I think it’s also ‘cause he’s a dragon and they’re mostly put in a negative light usually because they’re known to hoard treasure and guard castles to which they would be later slain by in knights fairy tales which is not entirely true and they’re more than that.
The important part of Spike’s character is that he is Not A Pony. So, the writers have to occasionally remind us of his not-a-pony status by treating him differently than ponies. Like sleeping in a basket instead of a bed, or being transformed into a dog when ponies are transformed into humans.
I personally feel that the writers don’t know what to do nor care for Spike, on the other hand I feel how other creatures such as the dragons, griffons, changelings, yaks etc. are seen as flawed while the ponies are seemingly flawless, implicating that the ponies are the superior race.
