Allegedly it just destroys the source of the power and doesn’t specifically add that power to the dragon.
Now I imagine Spike eating the Alicorn Amulet, gaining all its power, and turning into Super-Spikezilla.
If a dragon can destroy magical artifacts by eating them, it would be another indicator as to why dragons are so dangerous and the top of basically any “food chain” when they reach adulthood, as the season 8 finale defined that magical artifacts have the largest and most powerful reserves of magical energy.
A pony trying to use a powerful magical weapon of some sort would merely result in the dragon eventually eating it and nullifying it.
Except eating the book then had no side effects then, because the actual power had transferred to Rarity. The animamulet still retained its power.
It was answered in Inspiration Manifestation as he ate the whole book but destroying the book didn’t dispel the influence.
