Everyone preorder a Steam Deck and help linux gaming go more mainstream. Let Microsoft know their shenanigans with bloat and spying has gone on for far too long.

World's biggest idiot xD
We bought our first family PC in about 1996 (before that, we had an AMSTRAD! xD), and it ran on Windows 95 (no surprise). We later upgraded to 98.

The first PC I got for myself was in 2004, and ran on Windows 98SE. It was made cheaply out of second-hand parts that weren’t compatible (every time I switched it on, it detected its own MOTHERBOARD), and irrevocably crashed after about 6 months. In hindsight, I’m amazed it lasted that flamin’ long! xD

The second PC I bought was in 2005, and ran on XP. It was actually really reliable, and kept working fine for years, only gradually slowing down with age. Eventually I had to replace it, it was just getting way too slow to use anymore.

I replaced it in 2012 with a newer model PC running Windows 7. (Well I say “newer”, I know they were talking about rolling out Windows 8 within a few months of me moving up to 7). That one was so reliable, it’s the one I’m still using today. Given I’ve had just two PCs in a span of 16 years, who even knows when I’ll get my next one? :DDD

Apparently it’s because programs use Windows 9 as a catch-all for 95, 98, and possibly ME, so programs would think they were running on older operating systems.

Coming from a computing family, I’ve used pretty much every Windows from the very beginning except for server editions and pre-95 NT. My all-time favorite is still stable, reliable, solid-as-a-rock Windows 2000, which I was using when I finally began formal IT training (alongside OpenSUSE). I still have a W2k VM saved for when I want to play classic 16-bit windows games (shame on Microsoft for not updating WOW32 post-windows XP). You can mount a windows 95 environment on top of dosbox, but that’s more trouble than it’s worth compared to a simple VM.

Once I got into college and started using Suse and Ubuntu (before it was ruined by that fugly Origin DM), I learned to embrace Dr. Stallman’s Free as in Freedom rhetoric, but still, much like the x86 and “IBM Clones,” having a single, standardized platform like Microsoft’s virtual monopoly greatly benefited computing as a whole.

If only Android would get their shit together and drop the filthy, curated “walled garden” appstore shit. It’s bad enough Microsoft has pretty much ruined windows with the same sort of shenanigans trying to push their “UWP” nonsense and focusing more on useless “feature updates” that nobody wants than critical security and bug fixes.
