The problem isn’t that we’re getting a new edition, or that we’ve gotten new editions, it’s that these editions are getting more and more mechanically ridiculous in their attempts at streamlining. With 4e we had issues with the way threats scaled, and having to roll to know Bear Lore, with 5e we have unbreakable doors, even worse scaling, and a commoner having a one in four chance to sell Satan his own army.

Agreed. Which isn’t to say it wasn’t riddled with its own flaws; it’s just the best of the editions as of right now.

IMHO, it’s the new edition every (too) few years that’s been annoying people.

4th Ed got a lot of mechanical things right, but killed off a lot of what made 3rd Ed fun.

People grow attached to a D&D edition. Then newbies like a new edition and are like “what’s the big deal, let’s move onward and get the new version”.

Then, a few years later, they themselves have become the attached one and have to be told “let’s get the new version”.

Lather, rinse, repeat.
