Ten.
Seconds.
Flat.
Applejack and Twilight might be debatable, but Pinkie had an upper hoof on Dash entirely because of her Pinkie Sense. Even if Dash’s failures were largely the result of her own poor decisions, that still doesn’t change the fact the mane 6 were seemingly overlooking the very factor that spurred them to action in the first place. It should have been obvious to them that Dash would never consider blaming herself whenever Mare Do Well proves to be a better hero than her, especially given how inflated her ego already was.

because Pinkie, Twilight, and Applejack had abilities that Dash did not
None of it required any kind of extraordinary abilities she didn’t already possess, she was just too busy being amazed by herself to actually use them. Cherry Berry nearly crashed because Dash was signing autographs instead of flying up and catching her; the tourist wagon nearly crashed because Dash spent so long introducing herself that the passengers were calling her out on it; Dash only saved one construction worker because she applied her talent for self-aggrandizement to the situation rather than her talent for clearing the entire sky in 10.00s; the dam broke because Dash was literally patting herself on the back rather than holding it together and calling for help.
That only applies to the first instance. For everything that followed, Mare Do Well was more successful because Pinkie, Twilight, and Applejack had abilities that Dash did not.
They weren’t “more capable”, they just showed up and did the job while Dash was signing autographs or literally patting herself on the back.
In every instance where both of them were trying to save ponies, Mare Do Well proved to be more capable than Dash. That is pretty much the textbook definition of “outperform”.
seeing somepony outperform her
There was no “outperform her”; MDW showed up without grandstanding, saved someone without waiting to get noticed for it, and left without grandstanding. That was the entire point.
Also a good point.
@TexasUberAlles
The whole point of them resorting to drastic actions was because Dash had her head way too high in the clouds. They should have understood that the only thing Dash would have taken away from seeing somepony outperform her isn’t a lesson in humility but new competition in town. And when they had the chance to explain to her the humbleness that Mare Do Well was displaying, they end up completely blow it and only making Dash more agitated. I am well aware RD usually learns by drastic actions, but that doesn’t her emotions need to be toyed with in the process.
Whether or not she was showing off or not, rdibp’s point still remains. That move only served to make Dash feel even more inferior against Mare Do Well. Nothing about it evoked any sense of humility.

the way the mane six went about doing that was needlessly cruel
No, it really was not; they put on a costume and performed some civic-minded rescues. That’s it. Rainbow Dash was the only asshole in the episode, and she got over it, thanks to her friends giving her a lesson in what has been solidly, canonically established as the only way she is capable of learning lessons.
@rdibp
Fluttershy’s only purpose in being Mare Do Well WAS TO SHOW OFF
At no point did she “show off”; all she ever did in costume was… fly by in a straight line. The point of her being part of the caper was to keep Dash from falling back on “Well at least I can fly”– which is in fact exactly what she was doing when Flutter Do Well buzzed her– and falling even further into insufferable smugness.
There was also no reason for them to be ALL Mare Do Well.
I mean, Fluttershy’s only purpose in being Mare Do Well WAS TO SHOW OFF.
While drastic measures might have to be taken, openly upsetting them isn’t necessarily the only solution. I understand Rainbow needing to be knocked down a peg, but the way the mane six went about doing that was needlessly cruel. Not only do they subtlely imply humility through Mare Do Well to an individual already established as hard headed (they should have known all Dash would pick up from that is somepony one-upping her), but they also muddle their point during the Sugarcube Corner party. Although they do bring up Mare Do Well’s humbleness, the message quickly gets lost when they start making fun of RD for for her supposed jealously of MDW, despite her being visibly upset.

That was the idea. When your friend won’t listen to reason because they let their ego get the best of them (and because they just generally aren’t the kind of person who will sit down and have a rational discussion about an issue they’re convinced doesn’t even exist), you might need to do something that will upset them in order to make them look at the whole thing from a different angle.
The issue was that doing good isn’t about you, or the bragging rights, nor should it ever become a competition, and after the true nature of MMDW was revealed, Rainbow was finally in the state of mind to look back and understand that. Sometimes being a good friend means hurting someone a little in order to avoid them being hurt a lot in the future, rather than pretending everything is fine to avoid a conflict. Imagine Rainbow’s ego trip went on unchecked, with her convincing herself that the safety of everyone in Ponyville is her responsibility and hers alone, and then one day someone inevitably got badly hurt or died. What do you think that would do to her, what with the already mentioned glass jaw confidence of hers?
@Background Pony #CBFC
Case in point for what I said here.

They were well aware Mare Do Well’s constant outdoing of Rainbow Dash was making RD more and more frustrated. And while they did lead her into a more secluded area for the big reveal, Dash would have unmasked Mare Do Well even in the presence of the public.
@cloudkicker108
they nearly destroyed her self-confidence just to teach her a lesson about humility
No, they never did that. Any ball-tripping she did was out of their view until she ragequit the after-party at Sugarcube Corner, and their next play was to lead her on a merry chase through Ponyville until they got her someplace out of public view to reveal the wacky caper. AJ and Twilight and Old Yeller didn’t need to all show up in costume for the event, they only did it for the big reveal.
Just the fact that the other mane 5 decided to stalk her 24/7 in order to steal all the credits she could receive by helping other ponies is utterly retarded on it’s own. Like the fact that they were so butthurt about the fact that RD was actually saving lives and shit, and being proud of it.
She literally went from furious enough to physically confront Mare Do Well to apologetic within a minute or two.
An explainable decision does not indicate it was a good decision. For instance, Starlight’s motivations as a villain can be explained in part by her past, but I think we can all agree the inception of Our Town was a bad idea.
Nice rose-tinted glasses you have there. Because while those aspects certainly weren’t bad, I’ve yet to meet anyone else who thinks they were the pinnacle of perfection that you believe they are. Not even other individuals who liked the episode have made claims as audacious as yours. More importantly, though, none of that serves as an excuse to handwave the story, which at best has confusing logic and at worse makes a mockery of the remane 5.
I agree those small details are nice touches, but they’re supposed to complement the story, not make up for it.
Again, you really should take off those rose-tinted glasses. Right now you’re ignoring all the not so stellar elements of the episode. Need I remind you they taunted Dash after they had accused her of being jealous when she was already visibly upset? Or that they nearly destroyed her self-confidence just to teach her a lesson about humility? Look, if you honestly enjoy MMDW, all the more power to you. But that episode is hardly a “masterpiece”.

I’m not a fan MMDW, and I’m neither an RD fanboy nor someone who’s never watched the episode.
@rdibp
My thoughts exactly.

I’m not a fan MMDW, and I’m neither an RD fanboy nor someone who’s never watched the episode.
Rainbow Dash was the best thing in MMDW. The episode just had a really botched moral in how they decided to tell it.
…Yyyup.
I suspect the people who started the MMDW hate snowball were the kind of die-hard unquestioning RD fanboys who felt outraged at the very notion she could actually make a mistake, or ever lose sight of what’s important and need a reminder. Now everyone just takes it as a matter of course that MMDW is shit, because everyone says so. I bet half of the people perpetuating that axiom haven’t even watched the episode.
It’s one thing if you didn’t think MMDW was all that bad, but how exactly was that episode a “masterpiece”?
Mysterious Mare Do Well was a masterpiece.
