I think redweasel ment that for the same file size a high-res high-quality jpeg is better than a low-res PNG and I agree… a lot of times the artifacts aren’t even very visible with jpeg and for the same file size I’d MUCH rather have a high-res jpeg than a low-res pixelated PNG

Optimally a high-res PNG is best, yes… but I’m talking about jpeging an image for higher res for same file size as a low-res PNG

I’m tired of these 1000 x 1000 PNGs… I’d MUCH rather have a high-quality 2500 x 2500 jpeg for the same file size if the lower res PNG was uploaded due to wanting a low file size

@redweasel
noise is another big thing.. sometimes noise is added to an image for artistic effect and it raises the PNG to stupidly high file sizes

Lemme post an example where I’m glad a high-res high-quality jpeg was used instead of a lower-res PNG
>>1783687 the higher res is REALLY nice here.. and I don’t see any visible artifacting.. and I can usually spot artifacting pretty easily
Of course, for a lot of people just seeing ‘jpeg’ is a big turn-off… and it can be hard to enjoy an image even though it looks perfectly fine, I understand
Okay, I do actually see quite a bit of banding if I zoom way into the image in certain parts… but for the most part the jpeg isn’t that noticeable

I mainly used Jpegs cuz it was the only way to keep my file sizes smallish
My PSD files can easily get up to 650mb or higher
I think this pic was a little over 1 GB ish?

jpeg compression uses the differences between pixels, making it highly efficient at compressing gradients and blurs. png in comparison has to record all the transitionary pixels of anything other than flat shading. to get a picture down to a small enough file size, with png you just have to cut out parts, sharpen edges, and scale it way down. a jpeg of the same file size as a png will generally be higher quality, since jpeg sacrifices the information in the image that we can’t see, before the stuff that we can see.

so if you ever convert a jpeg into a png because png is better, you’re p. much absolutely horribly wrong in every way.

png is usually “better” than jpeg, because the artist uploads a f*cking gigantic 25 megabyte png file, with plenty of room for even the most precise pixel data, then uploads a 0.7 megabyte jpeg which looks practically the same but has slight jpeg artifacts. jpeg’s biggest flaw is it can’t do transparency, so images with transparency need to be pngs. if you’re an artist, and you have a picture that has transparency, or only uses flat shading (not even anti-aliasing) then share your image as a png. otherwise, a high quality, full sized jpeg will beat png every time.

there might be some other edge cases where png looks better, but just save it as both scaled down png and jpeg with roughly the same file size, and see which one looks better. never assume that it’s always gonna be png.

Original-res JPEG > downscaled PNG
I hate JPEG as much as the next guy but in this case it was the better option.

@redweasel

i think you got the wring way around, JPEGs are known for their horrible compression while PNGs have either no or loss-less compression, which means high quality pictures

Idk what that even has to do with what they’re saying, not even remotely close lol
the point they’re trying to say is that it slows down the site because it’s it takes awhile to read it

@Hypastpist
Well I uploaded it since it wasn’t here when I checked.
What’s the point of uploading a smaller res, I converted it to JPG since that means only a small drop in quality.
If the source file disappears some day it’s far better to have the original res JPG file here than some downscaled version.
If Derpibooru allowed the real original file I would have uploaded that instead but it seems 70MB are too much.
