Just to clarify, that joke about Shinji’s balls was just that, a joke. Nothing more. Even though I don’t honestly consider him spineless it’s still an overwhelmingly popular belief, so I rolled with it.

Also for that matter, if you want to see how a REAL kid would react to an alien invasion: Mars Needs Moms. There is nothing wish fulfilly about wanting to see kids react and act like damned kids. Shinji is completely justifiable, but he jumpstarted probably the worst trend in scripting ever once the full series was dubbed and broadcasted to the west.

It still doesn’t make him NOT a terrible character though. Yeah I really want my main characters to get over themselves by masturbating on dying girls they’re crushing on.  
Garbage like him isn’t common in mecha acutally, but everywhere else, such as pretentious indie crap, and mindnumbingly bland sitcom/dramadies, they are everywhere, and they are legion.  
Excluding Inception and superhero movies, I haven’t watched a non-pirated movie or an actual live-action TV show since 2003 because all writing is turning into this.

Yes I am aware of the irony of a Shiny RPer calling someone else a sissy.  
Anyway, it’s more Gendo’s fault than anything else he’s a sissy. Throwing a kid into the middle of a warzone goes more closely to those guys up above, than Shinji or Leo. They are crippled by parenting failures, and not the war trauma itself. Even Gen from Barefoot Gen acquits himself better and he doesn’t even have a giant robot to lean back on. Shinji had more trauma inflicted upon him by his personal life than fighting angels. Still doesn’t make him a respectable character, but at least unlike Leo it’s justified in-story.
 
 
Also there’s a fic somewhere where Shinji is a nerd and welcomes the call to action, and becomes ridiculously hot-blooded but I can’t remember the name of it. It shows the remarkable difference between canon Shinji, and Shinji-as-one-of-those-blokes-above.

Yes honestly, the whole “hurr durr, Shinji is a spineless wimp” is said by retards who honestly didn’t understand the show and it’s characters. The fact that Shinji still piloted and fought even though he was scared shitless alone is enough to tell me that anyone who calls Shinji a wimp is someone who doesn’t know how to use the word properly.
