oh, for anyone who doesn’t understand blockchains:
computer crunches random numbers → proof-of-work
sell proof-of-work → digital signature
list of all digital signatures ever → blockchain
blockchain → fuel for more proof-of-work
blockchain gets 50gb bigger every year (for bitcoin) at current rates
you need to follow the entire blockchain to verify, buy, or sell any coin, so various scammers exchanges say they’ll totally do that for you, if you send them your money and pray.
Rainbow Dash says it’s good I’m diversifying with Ethereum and bitcoin but we both agree I’m not building the shotguns fast enough. I need more tools grumble grumble.
I think there’s a point where you can’t increase the anonymity of your currency, without opening yourself up to potential thievery. cash just… ignores the thievery and goes (almost) full anon. we could definitely do better than cash, but a public blockchain of digital signatures is not what I’d call a solution.
really it all comes down to the misbegotten delusion that work has value. we’re paying people to bang their heads against the wall. it’s just ludicrous.
@wenni
It helps that the people who say regular money is worth something have powerful governments backing them. If the Equestrian bit ever becomes worthless, it’s because the Equestrian government has fallen, in which case canned food and shotguns are a better investment than virtual Alf pogs.
they could pass a law making all bitcoin transactions illegal, that aren’t done with a key registered under your legal name. the wallet’s public key is recorded in every transaction, so it’s trivial to then assemble a history of all your purchases and sales, and to whom.
compare that with cash, where no law can recover a history of purchases and sales that doesn’t exist.
@Kamazeustra
While every transaction may be viewed, no locations, names, or any personal information nor information beyond how much of the currency is transferred is recorded. This ensures privacy.

Why not both?

I was talking about bitcoin. monero is better, I suppose, but it’s not perfect.
