And I LOVE this sort of stuff. I would have loved Reflections if it wasn’t crap. I still do actually, just in the guilty pleasure sense.
 
It’s the whole “Celestia doomed the universe for a booty call” thing that makes that arc shit, not the Multiverse.

At the end of this comic, it’s shows that the Stygian has the potential to become the PoS that has nothing to do with the Alt U; it’s just something inside him that if not tempered, is revealed. So assuming no alt U influence on Cele or Luna here, and from the Alt PoS’ statements, they both have a similar potential to become evil w/o influence of this alt U.
 
In other words, Luna’s transformation to NMM has nothing to do with the alt U, the alt U just shows what happens when that darkness achieves victory.

In all seriousness, it would explain a lot. Even if I prefer it wasn’t quite so meta. None of the characters facing Shadow Pony have a reason to know what the hay he’s talking about with Nightmare Moon and Daybreaker.

The design is probably inspired by Maleficent, but on a pony, it’s still kind of adorable.
