It’s all about pronunciation in that translation. There doesn’t seem to be any particular combination of characters that both resemble the pronunciation and has a similar meaning.
That all made perfect sense except for “Canterlot.” I have many questions about that translation.
Cloudsdale = 雲中城 = Cloud City
Canterlot = 坎特拉城 = kǎn tè lā City
坎 = pit
特 = bull
拉 = to drag
Crystal Empire = 水晶王國 = crystal kingdom
水晶 = crystal (water crystal)
王 = king
國 = country
Everfree Forest = 永恆自由森林 = Eternal Freedom Forest
永恆 = eternal
自由 = freedom
森林 = forest (you can probably tell just by looking at it)
Ponyville = 小馬谷 = Pony Valley
Appleloosa = 蘋果羅沙鎮 = Apple luó shā town
蘋果 = apple
羅 = collect
沙 = sand
鎮 = town
