crypto-currencies require computing power to secure the currency network by processing currency transactions. [basically what irl banks do with regular money]

Bitcoin (and many other currencies) use a Proof-of-Work [PoW] system to secure the transaction, which has random users connect to the network and contribute computing power to producing the increasingly complex hash of the next block in the chain (which includes all transactions in its history). This is called “mining”. You get paid for contributions to the next block. It’s no more, in theory, than you running mining software on your internet-connected PC.

The joke here of course being you do not physically mine bitcoin.

Some currencies are moving towards using a Proof-of-Stake [PoS] system, which makes mining obsolete.

[Incidentally, if that were a real bitcoin, it’d be worth over $10,000]
