Nah, it would only work if he was the son of a couple that has hardly exchanged any dialogue at all up to his appearance, with little to no buildup to their relationship.

Well pretty much what I see is that he comes from a future where Twilight died of a rare disease and as the results the elements of harmony were incomplete, then months later some sort of evil appears and kills the rest of the mane 6 except Rarity as well as Celestia and Luna…

I actually heard that the person who voiced Vegeta in one of Dragonball Z’s many dubs also voiced an older Gen version of Spike. And the person who voices Spike now also voiced trunks.
