Well, it was also responsible why Twilight let Equestria down after she failed to save Equestria because of her actions in Seaquestria by distracting or disrupting the Mane Five and Queen Novo while she was trying to steal the pearl.

True, I mean, they were caught off-guard by Tempest’s attack since she fired those Obsidian orbs at them while their attention was diverted. Cadence was the only one who actually tried to hold off the one that got her as it took some effort before it shattered her shield and got through.

Like this didn’t having any negative effects the sisters.

You’re right. Because while Tempest and Grubber went to the Mysterious South beyond Equestria to find Twilight and bring her back to Equestria, the Storm King was in charge of ruling and destroying Equestria and assumed the throne in Canterlot. The Storm King’s ruling of Equestria was full of darkness, savage, punishment, slavery, hard larvor, captivity, and destruction to some landmarks and cities while the Mane Six went away to go south beyond the Badlands and seek help from Queen Novo and the hippogriffs.

Though since he is only interested in their magic to power the Staff of Sacanas, taking them as spoils of war while still petrified would be a bonus for him.

True, and if Tempest turning them into statues means Storm King can keep them as trophies compared to how he spared the leaders of previous conquests after plundering them, he essentially will leave Equestria leaderless, which will break the spirits of the ponies similarly to how he broke the spirits of those leaders he conquered the lands of by taking what they relied on the most.
 
Taking the Princesses, who are symbols of hope and guidance for Equestria, would shatter the spirits of the ponies.
