The show does contradict EQG, it’s not even ambiguous.
 
I think it was Jim Miller who tweeted that Sunset Shimmer is only canon to EQG, and more recently tweeted that whether it’s canon or not is up to the viewer.

If a secondary work is never referenced in the main work but the main authors seem to be making some efforts never to contradict material from the secondary work, then it is entirely up to the viewer whether the secondary work is to be taken along with the main work or not.
 
I suggest the word “deuterocanonical” for such plotlines.

As long it isnt mentioned in the show itself, in any form, it isn’t canon. Tweets are irrevelant, the show isn’t.

The show goes out of its way to not mention EQG and even contradicts it, so it’s natural that people take anything Ms. McCarthy tweets with a grain of salt, especially when other staff tweeted the opposite.
 
The “not referencing thing” is true (though irrelevant), but the contradicting thing is not. It’s canon.
 
Also, when did anyone on the level of McCarthy say the opposite since her tweet?
