Sure you can. Gender is just a general societal rule that people are just expected to label themselves with based on biological sex, and the rules vary widely between societies and cultures and time periods. If people want to make their own rules and wear their own labels, that’s their business, and the only obligation they have is to tell people what those labels are if the ones they’re using don’t fit the general societal ones. Hence, Pride flags; streamlines the conversation so that anyone paying attention knows how to not be an asshole about it.

No, it’s a made up gender from Buddhist Vinaya; ubhatobyañjanaka and pandaka, also a made up gender from the Illiniwek tribe of American Indians, also another made up gender from Indonesia; Waria. I could go on.  
Turns out it’s been made up by a lot of different people from a lot of different times from even before Tumblr appeared.  
Like most concepts we use to describe ourselves, it’s all technically made up. The difference is whether it’s made up from a real concept or something else. But considering the variety of people before the internet existed or before most modern inventions existed, and how many cultures came up with this similar idea of a third gender, or even more than three, it seems like maybe there’s an underlying universal experience they’re describing.  
Just maybe.

If you read the Deviantart description they picked Gilda (and likely the rest of the characters) because of the characters color schemes rather than some kind of head canon deal. Also you could always just block the artist if you really want.
