Doesn’t a sheepish smile mean an ‘awkward’ or ‘embarrassed’ grin though, while smug smile is more ‘confident’ or ‘arrogant’?
Even without context, they seem more like they’re sharing an insider joke than feeling dumb about something.
IMO, anyway.
