Well not every earth pony family has a representative tree/plant, so I thought, probably not something they all do, maybe a just a certain type of farming families.
And the fact they were feuding made the symbolism a bit stronger.

It’s not too hard to see the symbolism in it. I’d find it hard to believe these two were the first Earth ponies to think of it.
I think that might have been a symbolic thing they made up on the spot.
