Yes, the issue here is that Rainbow didn’t make any attempt at stopping giant Spike, unlike the Wonderbolts.
You can be the most efficient and able soldier ever, yet you’d still just be a fly in front of Godzilla. I dont’ get this weird, overinflated notion a few people seem to have about non-alicorn ponies’ combat abilities. They’re not the PPG.

Fluttershy didn’t fight a dragon either, but she did talk to it. That dragon wasn’t evil nor had any intent of damage.
If a mean spirited dragon would come, then Fluttershy might not stand a chance.
Also, what were the Wonderbolts supposed to do when a huge dragon SUDDENLY holds up a torn off water tower in front of your while you’re charging at it! They clearly didn’t think he was smart enough to do that in that state.
