Oh, yeah, modern tanks fire much faster projectiles. The Abrams main gun apparently has a muzzle velocity of somewhere between 1580 to 1750 m/s, I’m assuming depending on ammunition type. (Compare to Tiger II at 1000-1130 m/s). They’re also tiny, relative to the diameter of the barrel:

The idea being that a very fast, very hard, needle like projectile will be able to penetrate armor more effectively than a larger-diameter one.

WWII probably had the greatest recoil/weight ratios. As the years went on, though, I think weapons designs started favoring higher speed projectiles over higher mass; keeping energy constant, this reduces momentum, at the same time certain tank designs got heavier. The M1 Abrams is a lot heavier than the Shermans were (though to my surprise, actually slightly lighter than the Tiger II).

I can buy that rationale; That particular group of nerds just happened to be pretty terrible at driving there, though.

For oversimplified back of the envelope physics:

A 10.4 kilogram shell moving at 1000 meters per second impacts a tank weighing 19 metric tons and doesn’t penetrate. Assuming the shell stops moving completely when it hits, I figure the tank ought to leave the collision moving at a little over .54 meters per second. So yeah, it’s probably moving a little fast but not totally ridiculous.

Unless you’re talking about the whole “sci-fi impenetrable crew compartment and safety shells” thing. The physics are probably pretty sketchy on that one, but the show would be way less fun without it.
