As soon as the Black Mercy runs into problems—such as an outsider trying to pry the plant off of you—the happy fantasy falls apart. You’re forced to watch your greatest, dearest wish crumble before your eyes.
 
Superman went from a lifetime of happy memories with a loving family to holding his crying son in his arms, about to die from Krypton exploding. Batman had a dream of his father fighting off the mugger, until it changed to the mugger getting the upper hand again and shooting the Waynes.
 
It’s actually an important reason why Mongul chose to use the Black Mercy. To escape the trap, you have to let yourself be hurt in the worst possible way. “It must’ve been like tearing off your own arm”, as he puts it.

Why? As I recall the Black Mercy doesn’t terrorize you, it gives you a happy fantasy. The only problem I can see is with someone not wanting to awaken from it.
