There’s a huge hole in that statement: It didn’t show that anyone could be a hero… Because it was exclusively shown that MDW was an alicorn from everyone else’s perspective… so that’s an automatic fail.
 
If they really wanted to teach kids and civilians that everyone could be a hero, they wouldn’t have used the costume at all, if anything it would have just disguised themselves as normal citizens.
 
It’s pretty clear that the mane 5 had no intent on showing the rest of the citizen that anyone could be a hero. Never once it actually state that on-screen or hinted that was their intent, they were just doing it to teach Rainbow Dash of very poorly thought-out lesson.
 
MDW may have had good intentions, but it was a selfish mistake.

Kinda hope there’s a an episode focusing on this… but I won’t get hopes up…

Hey remember when Chad had well-thought-out criticisms of the weaker episodes of the show instead of all-out hatred for show because his beloved Faust is no longer involved with it? Yeah, I want that Chad back too…

It’s not that anyone can be a hero anonimouse, it’s that the object of her affection was fabricated. A total and complete lie to teach a lesson to one mare who was acting kinda arrogant.  
It’s the same as finding out a childhood hero was just acting the whole time and didn’t give a damn about anything.

So…many…feels!

But Rainbow Dash explicitly told all those fillies that no one could be a hero like her, while Mare Do Well showed that anypony can be a hero.
