Description

To me, there has always been striking differences between the stories of Sunset Shimmer and Starlight Glimmer. Sunset Shimmer is basically a good person who went down the wrong path, and must prove to the world that it is possible to come back from the brink and become that good person again. Starlight Glimmer is basically, at her core, a bad person who desperately wants to be good, and she must prove to herself that it is possible to fight your better nature to be who you want to become. At least, that’s how I see them…

Though one of the biggest similarities between them is that they both have meaningful, intriguing stories to tell.

It’s a generic Army/Special Forces Older Soldier finally accepting and/or Encouraging Young/New guy. Yes it likely started as a direct quote, but that would have been decades ago.

What are her other options? She can’t exactly go back to being bad. She almost accidentally ended the world last time she tried, and the time before that she suffered a big loss comprised of several smaller losses in a row. It ain’t working. Pretty sure she’s gonna have to cut her losses.

Precisely. There was more love then hate when the episode aired and I watched it, and since the show was still in its world-building stage, an alicorn far weaker then the 2 sisters who was potentially a niece of Celestia, along with a few other small issues, only caused a small stir(large in some circles, but still small) compared to the overwhelming positives. Plus the standards and elements of seriousness in the show were brought to new heights without any massive drop in writing quality. Which is why I listed it as a success in the long run. :)

You’re probably right, but I didn’t focus much on seeing opinions of people much right after the episode first aired, so that be why I missed a lot of it. Still, it is true that it wasn’t quite as world-ending as later stuff was/is.

Oh, there was plenty of it, but I don’t remember it being at “show is ruined forever” that was standard for near every episode S03 onwards. “Things happened” during the S02-3 hiatus.

I truthfully don’t recall seeing very many critiques about that, most stuff I saw was raging love boners for Chrysalis, the changelings, the songs, and storyline. Most of the Cadence and Shining Armor drama came months before the episode aired when the toys for the castle playset at the time were revealed, along with snippets of synopsis.

Maybe I am biased as that is still my favorite episode(s) to date, but after it aired, I saw more love than hate.

-A Canterlot Wedding was a massive success

Sounds like you weren’t actually in the fandom when that episode happened. There weee tons of people upset about another alicorn coming out of nowhere, not to mention twilight suddenly getting a brother as well

@vevans0009
I feel a need to redact my previous statement since I said it while I was in a rush and wasn’t fully thought out. I apologize :(

||
-The series premier was the premier. It wasn’t perfect, but it was very good. Not much you can criticize on the first trial episodes.
-Season 1 was almost exclusively a character building season, so the Gala finale was a good way to end the season.
-Discord’s introduction has very few complaints. It introduced one of the most notorious characters in MLP, and did it quite well.
-A Canterlot Wedding was a massive success and introduced debatably the most notorious of MLP villains.

Then two issues started being introduced in the show premiers and finales….the limits of a two episode time limit effecting delivery, and contrasting messages that split the fandom.

-No one will deny Twilight’s Kingdom’s visuals were amazing, but it had a hard time making sense. Celestia’s reasons for trusting Discord at the beginning are just as confusing as her, and everyone else, trusting Discord at the end. Each six’s key was supposed to unlock ultimate power for all six of them, but Twilight was the only one allowed to talk while using it. Tirek starts off from sith lord master with no mercy to a muscle-head with only the most blatent of deceptions. And Discord’s reasonings for helping the Mane 6 with the anti-Tirek and Discord mcguffins before leaving to betray them and not do anything about it leaves Discord’s. Another mess
-Starlight’s first episode was hardly the worst two-parter, but her philosophy, magic, and origin eventually boiled down to nothing. And for a premier, it was pretty isolated.

Nobody needs me to mention the other premiers and finales. Everyone already knows the massive issues surrounding those.||

Point is, the show has almost always been crippled by 2 or even 1 episode limits and other mandated constraints, mixing these regular problems into fandom splitting problems. So many times we wished a premier or finale would be simply GOOD with no massive caveats, but we keep on getting dissapointed and not out of pickiness. Gauntlet of Fire felt like more of a successful finale then many of the actual finales and premiers.

But were getting sidetracked here…

The level of investment the series has given to Sunset Shimmer is insane when compared to the current seasons, especially the head writer of MLP who is more involved in building up her character arc, while Starlight’s backstory and character is basically just ignored whenever convenient. Twilight’s the main character of FiM, yet she keeps most of her emotions at arms length for half a dozen seasons, and now Starlight, not a recluse like early Twi but a villain, has her entire acceptance stage skipped for a montage to the point where the next time we see her, Spike is hugging her. EG2 and onwards seems to have very different priorities then the 2-parters in the show. And Starlight being officially closer to Trixie then Twilight makes her role as ‘next alicorn’ seem unlikely, especially since she’s officially announced as just a reoccurring character, not a main character. Its especially glaring when the last two seasons have felt more like filler then anything really story growth related.

The theatrical release 2017 movie is NOT the show. It is an entirely different medium on a far bigger stage, and can take from whatever main stream continuity it desires with the head writer having the biggest say in what occurs.

I’m just saying its extremely naive that the two canon continuities will never intersect if something big is introduced.

well EG is a fanfic of FiM, so people wish that it would be referenced in the show.

plus sunset’s pony design isn’t half bad.

some people just want to see sunset in the show. how’s that hard to understand?
CronoM

@vevans0009
I said succsessfully. Canterlot wedding, the good parts of twilight’s kingdom… (white noise). Some like the others but beyond the first eg film, the have been no major gripes compared to the premier and finales.

@redweasel
Where do people even get that idea?
She’s not a FiM character, she’s EG.
Any issues revolving around Equestria can be done in her series, not need to dedicate any of FiM towards it.

“The show has not written a large plot successfully without sunset for a long time.”

What are you talking about? They have done plots without Sunset many times on the show.

@vevans0009
The real deal breaker one way or another is the 2017 movie. Theyve been planning the movie for a long time before starlight glimmer and the idea that its contuisly flipped to canon shows they simply don’t want to give away future surprises.

The thing with EQG canonicity is that the staff flip-flop on it to avoid drama when people start raising their voice . (See McCarthy flip flopping with the definition of the word “canon” back in 2013)
Then they made massive damage control to separate the 2 universe to muddle the issue further
