“Midnight in Canterlot” was actually first released in 2013. It was just only at one store (Costco, maybe? I’m not up on all the toy trivia, but I know it was an exclusive, making the Minty figure that was only available in that rather expensive set quite sought after.) But apparently it’s getting a wider release. More Minty goodness!
I really wish they’d sell her solo, though. As well as other past-gen characters (or, if trademark is lost, characters who look enough like them and are named sorta close.)
I don’t see why they don’t do that all the time. I mean, even within FIM, even kids know who “Snipsy-Snap” and “Snailsquirm” are supposed to be when they see them on the shelves. Transformers get rereleased with slightly altered names or prefixes all the time. “Autobot Ratchet” or “Autobot Jazz” instead of just Ratchet or Jazz, and Shockwave was Shockblast for a while, and at least one Laserbeak has his name spelled Lazorbeak. Bombshell still gets sold as Hardshell, even after the name was taken by a prominent, not-at-all-Bombshell-esque Prime character.
Of course, the kids won’t always know who the older characters are… at first. DVDs are a thing, after all. And there are so many toy ponies who aren’t based on anyone from the show, not even background ponies. Anyone who’d buy a “Honey Rays” or a “Flitterheart” without knowing who they are because they aren’t anyone would be just as likely to buy a Firefly or a Bright Eyes or a Star Catcher - warp the names a little if necessary to pass legal - and then there are some people do know who they are. So it’s not like ‘taking a risk’ on unknown characters.
Oh, well. At least we do get Moondancer. Maybe she won’t be the last. (And some more whose original versions were toy-only, to be fair, but… Sugar Belle’s not quite the same as Firefly.)
I almost hated G4 from the outset because it lacked Minty. I’m glad I gave it a chance anyway, and it certainly didn’t disappoint, but MINTY! So yeah, this is even better.
Minty is going to pop up in Season 7, have power and magic that outmatches all the alicorns combined, make Old Glim look like a saint, and through all the trouble she puts the characters through, she learns one thing (be nice) and becomes an alicorn. Oh and none of the Mane 6 appear in the finale aside from Spike.
If all this happens, the nuclear war within the fandom will be hilarious.

Mehopes it’s a sign of something. :3
Derpy Hooves with corrected vision and obsessed with socks instead of muffins, she also starred in the only tolerable Gen3 special.
What’s her story?
And then Rainbow dash will lose her wings, Open a fashion boutique, and always dress in style.
