Yes, but Discord was more than just a jerk. He was a capable adversary with a cruel sense of humor, and represented a hugely increased threat compared to Nightmare Moon, setting the tone for villains to come. He’s been compared to the Joker in terms of alternating between hilarious and terrifying, and with good reason.
 
The short with Flash was basically an arts and crafts project that devolved into semi-random bickering. It was definitely funny, but you could basically replace any of the guys with any other guy and it’d play out pretty much the same.

 
I don’t care if a person is bad or good, as long as he is written well. Just look at Discord, people liked him long before he was reformed, heck, most liked him even more back then. So jerk or not, at least he was not “token love interest #107”

Personally I wouldn’t really put much trust in the novelizations for details anyways, especially if it’s one that was released before the movie.

That’s what I thought at first, too, but it seems like everyone else sees romancey stuff and there’s a line in the novelization that suggests they’re right and I’m wrong, so this isn’t the windmill I want to pick a fight with. I stand by the “lost puppy” thing, though. And don’t get me started on Timber. Just don’t.

Man, the speed at which Timber X Twilight moved in the movie just kills it to me.  
I was trying to give it a chance, but I ended up giving up on it immediately. Specifically when Twilight blushes at Timber, I think maybe even before they talked to each other.

That being said, saying he has no purpose is a bit of a stretch. I mean it’s not like he doesn’t have a life outside the women he dates.
 
That’s not really how he came off, he was mainly trying to patch things up at the time, he made it very clear that he wanted to start over as friends. Besides, if he was moving too fast, then what does that say about Timber, who basically started flirting the very millisecond he saw Twilight? Heck it was only two days before the two were ready to suck face.

He doesn’t have a purpose. He could find one, but right now he’s completely adrift, and he’s well aware of it. He let his life become about Twilight, and without her, he’s basically lost. That, plus spending most of his time in FG and LoE being the butt of jokes, makes it seem to me like he’s hit rock bottom.
 
And you can go crawling back to someone you dumped. It’s not what he did, it’s how he did it. He just had a “lost puppy” vibe about him during that whole scene, plus if he really did decide he wanted to get back together between the two times they spoke in this movie, it seems like he was in kind of a big hurry. For good reason, mind you, but it still suggests to me he’s not in a great place right now.
 
I’m not trying to attack Flash, I’m just saying that he’s been kicked around a lot by recent events and I get the distinct impression that Fluttershy has better self-esteem than him at this point.
 
I think this mostly boils down to poor word choice; “pathetic”, in retrospect, implies a contempt that I didn’t actually mean to convey.
 
(And believe me, if we actually get to see Sunset and Flash do any patching things up, I will be pleased as punch, but it seems like the kind of thing they’d expect the target audience to not care about.)

i actually think questioning someones investment in something specific is not wrong per-se. Some people really need to let things go. It’s rather the “making fun of” and “disagreeing without explaining why and unwilling to discuss” is the problem

SU “conventions” and fans outright start witchunts and aim all their fury into blackmailing, hatemailing andstepping over their target to the point they commit suicide. That’s the one difference: Our Dramas are, at the end of the day, “harmless”.

People getting this invested and angry over the plot of a lame cartoon. It’s like a Steven Universe convention.

First of all, simply saying that he pathetic and has no purpose because he doesn’t have a girlfriend anymore is nothing short of petty, cruel, and downright pitiful on your end.
 
Second of all, how do you know they won’t talk things out first and won’t just simply going skip to the “get back together” scenario?
 
Third of all, he didn’t go “crawling back to her” he said he wanted to start over as friends, he didn’t just ask her out on a date, that would’ve been desperation. Also, “crawling back to her” would imply that she dumped him, which isn’t the case. If you watch the first movie it’s explicitly stated that he broke up with her for obvious reasons.
 
So please get your facts straight.

That’s actually kinda why I feel sorry for him. He’s hit rock bottom. He’s pathetic. The boy has no purpose, and he knows it. He’s basically been chasing a ghost since the Fall Formal, and now that he’s finally managed to accept that it’s over, the first thing he does is go crawling back to Sunset. If he’s really trying to hook back up with her, I think desperation might be a factor in how he’s going about it.

Whatever. I’ve seen it too often and I’m sick of it. It feels like every time I see a divorced couple in a movie, they’re married again by the time the credits roll, with zero effort towards fixing whatever made them split in the first place.

That’s not really a cliche, there’s noting saying they are “perfect” for each other, but them patching things up and remembering why they fell in love in the first place isn’t uncommon. Especially since Flash broke up with her because she was being a total jerk, seeing her change for the better would be a good reason for them getting together again.
