You are a very sensible person.
I just don’t get why you see him so negatively, Starlight certainly doesn’t (she outright said it didn’t matter to her if he succeeded in magic school or not). And I doubt our former self-described “evil” cult leader sees herself as “better” than a pony whose main failing was not knowing what he was supposed to do with his skills. It just seems needlessly critical on your part. He’s no more a failure than any other character who has lost direction in life, including ones like the much beloved Moondancer.
And I’m pretty sure he and Starlight would have made up eventually regardless, as it was one of the friendship lessons Twilight planned.
That is meaningless, were Twilight and Starlight never returned or the baby never broken the crystal he’d live his entire life as a failure, regardless of how good he can be at something he was always too much of a foal to realize it.
I know that there won’t ever be any canon relationships between the ponies but making them together would certainly be the only pairing I object to, Starlight deserves better.
Not so much a failure as much as someone who didn’t realize how best to direct his gifts. His skills with magical theory are what saved the empire after all.

He was inconsequential about those who knew him back home, preferring to live a lie in Crystal City, he was a failure alright and that’s why he didn’t deserve someone as good as Starlight that could have been a Twilight² all along were her given better opportunity… lucky enough Twilight gave her the chance.
@Ryodraco
He moved away and then was too ashamed to write back because he thought he was an embarrassing failure. It’s that he couldn’t face her, not that he was being a dick to her.
I don’t see how that’s true, he was a good friend by all accounts until he moved away. Starlight ultimately has no one but herself to blame for her choices. Sunburst was just a kid himself, one can’t be too hard on him for not realizing that separating from Starlight was a lot more traumatic for her than him. Twilight even outright calls out how much Starlight overreacted, especially considering Starlight never tried to reach out to him as far as we know.

Same here, Sunburst was a dick to her from the start, he’s the reason she became evil in the first place.
I have greatly disliked Sunburst from start, in fact I have since episode 1 in this season considered he did not deserve Starlight at all.
Well she does have that same curly mane thing going on
