Its also due to my own personal bias on Discord but my point still stands that Starlight has been more successful at friendship so far.

Woah there. I think that’s going way too far. By this point Discord clearly wants to be a decent friend as well, he’s just TERRIBLE at getting the finer details of friendship which coupled with his chaotic nature and all-powerful magic, ends up leaving a worse impression than what he’s normally aiming for. There’s also his massive ego clashing with the fact that he’s basically an infant when it comes to friendship, so he has a hard time accepting he’s the one who’s wrong about something.
 
Saying he doesn’t care about being a good friend though, that’s an exageration.

She wasn’t trying to conquer the world at the time.

I kind of understand their difference. Discord is the egoistic type. He want ALL the good perks that comes from friendship like skiing, tea times and getting hugs from Fluttershy on the beach. But he doesn’t want give anything in return. His bad side was tamed but not neutralised.  
Starlight want to be like Mane6 and she’s pressured in doing so out of guilt of her past misdeeds. She want to be liked by Sunburst and Trixie and she fears that her failing at frinedships tests would cast her aside from these friends and Mane6. Being cast aside was something she fear the most just like Discord, that was the reason she blamed the cutie marks in the first place rather than her own lack of communication.

Twilight: Well unlike you Discord, Starlight actually cares about wanting to be a decent friend.

She never had ill intentions. Discord, on the other hand, did.

Even if I think he’s wrong, this is definitely in-character.

Both Discord and Starlight are sociopaths. The only difference is that Starlight want to change and become a reliable pony citizien while Discord just want to fit in enough for Fluttershy to hang out with him.

Discord did his out of fun, Starlight did it out of fear that she won’t be able to match her friends’ capabilities and thus fail them.

Yep, pretty much. Indeed, even in “Dungeons and Discords” he was actually reminiscing about how much fun putting them against each other was.

I think at this point Twilight just wants the series to end.

Again, she was remorseful. Discord has yet to even attempt to apologize for what he did to them, plus her destruction was unintentional, Discord does everything knowing full well what he is doing

Discord got turned to stone for being an unremorseful dictator who turned all of Equestria into his personal amusement park (and was still offered a second chance as soon as he showed any capacity for being better). Hardly a double standard.
