unless you were either Roman or Norse, then you bathed at least once a day.
That’s what I meant.
The Natives were generally very clean people and first thought the settlers must’ve reeked or something.
Sorry for the grammar.
You have that bathing thing backwards. It was the Europeans who never bathed.
Europeans were amazed at how much First Nations People bathed and their obsession of not smelling like shit.
That and the Native Americans had no previous experience, and therefore resistance, with the diseases the Europeans carried. And yes, many Europeans intentionally infected Native Americans with diseases like smallpox when it was convenient, a form of biological warfare.
On the other hand, syphilis is a terrifying disease that still infects millions of people a year, and it was believed to have been a disease that Columbus’ men picked up from the Americas.
But yeah, as long as contemporaries acknowledge that their societies aren’t perfect in how they deal with individuals, the collective, and their environment and they actively try to do something about it, it’s all good.
Also, to be fair, while settlers weren’t the nicest people, most (90%+) Native Americans died from immigrant diseases because they never bathed until like the 17th century or whatever.
Ugh.
Well there’s a lot of effed up things too in modern times too.
I am aware of that, and I’m not denying that.
By that logic, the same could be said for modern times.
Boy life back in the olden days was pretty effed up when you stop and think about it.
