>Maybe they do; Dash sure was out of the hospital quick in Read It And Weep for having such a thoroughly trashed wing
We don’t know the actual timelapse of her permanence in the hospital. 1 week, 1 month. It was never clearly stated. If they used magic, and healing magic takes much time, what’s the need to abuse magic when science provides the same results in a really similar timespan?
>I’m sure it’s like any other ability: most are no good at it, some are good at it, and a few can do it professionally; even in this world there are a lot of ubiquitous medications that some people can’t take because they have an allergy or adverse reaction to them.
On the other side, If effective and fast healing spells are a thing, the most logical thing is to have all doctors to use them at best. It would be a condicio sine qua non to be a physician, like studying anatomy. Why using a more long and risky non-magical technique to do the same thing as magic which is more fast and reliable?
This reminds me of some Naruto bullshit, where Sakura was trained in 3 years to be a ninja doctor and be able to give commands to actual physicians which maybe have more experience and studied more year to be real doctors. What’s the need for the ninja society to make people study at least 6 years of medicine, when in 3 years you can be a top notch professor thanks to magic? The classical medicine study would be totally a less efficient choice from a society pov. I think the same thing can be logically applied to the Equestrian society too.
>The Breezification was a rush job because the portal was closing;
Yes they was rushed because of the portal, but having a time-dependat spell logically puts hurry in the caster. And if you have the chance of making a permanent spell, why making it time-limited only to have one more annoyance?
Just like Cinderella who runned away at the midnight.
>Twilight’s “…Not a chance” line at the end implied pretty strongly that the main stumbling block to turning Rainbow Dash into a Griffon or Dragon or whatever was that she didn’t want Dash to abuse it.
this doesn’t effect the fact that the life spells may be temporary or not.

If there are working healing spells, why don’t they train physicians to use them?
Maybe they do; Dash sure was out of the hospital quick in Read It And Weep for having such a thoroughly trashed wing. It’s never been important to any of the stories the show wants to tell so the show’s never bothered to elaborate on the matter, but there’s a lot about daily life in Equestria that they’ve never elaborated upon. If such things exist I’m sure it’s like any other ability: most are no good at it, some are good at it, and a few can do it professionally; even in this world there are a lot of ubiquitous medications that some people can’t take because they have an allergy or adverse reaction to them.
The Breezification was a rush job because the portal was closing; to me at least, Twilight’s “…Not a chance” line at the end implied pretty strongly that the main stumbling block to turning Rainbow Dash into a Griffon or Dragon or whatever was that she didn’t want Dash to abuse it.
do you really think that Twilight would ever put a spell on an innocent animal with the risk of permanently damage it?
Even the breezie spell was temporary. If Twilight was able to make a permanent spell, why making a short-lived spell forcing them to rush things instead of a spell that can be cancelled on the need?
If there are working healing spells, why don’t they train physicians to use them? What’s the need of training Earth pony/pegasus to be physician?
Are unicorn physicians with a medical CM unable to use medical spells? This would make no sense considering what we know about ponies and Cutie Marks.

none of the ‘‘life manipulation’’ spells have permanent effects
I don’t think that sort of thing is nearly as rare or temporary as all that.
Both of these nightmares of science stuck around with no obvious sign of reverting to their original forms, and the opening sequence of Every Little Thing She Does had Twilight and Starlight casually popping off that kind of transformation magic; admittedly they’re both pretty powerful, but if it’s casual for them then presumably Unicorns who were almost as good could do it with more effort, or create artifacts to do so.
I’ve just always figured that the reason we don’t see much in the way of permanent injuries is that the Earth Pony nurses do have some kind of spirit/chi/bio-energy based healing magic, it’s just not the sort of Health Potion +10 instant fix magic that most people think of when they talk about magical healing.
Well, if you’re talking about stuff like healing magic, it wouldn’t put all the doctors out of business if only a small handful of ponies in all of Equestria are capable of doing that. Due to the rarity of that skill, doctors would still be in high demand I’m sure.
I don’t think that sex change spells exists at all, and none of the “life manipulation” spells have permanent effects or there will be no need of hospital or physicians in Equestria.
In magic Duel for instance Trixie where shocked to see the “sex change” spell on Applejack. Something probably impossible even for someone who was wearing the alicorn amulet.
the sort of thing you need to consult an expert for
Sure– but those experts are around. In a land where everyone has some kind of magic, the chances of finding someone with the right kind of magic (and the ability to use it at an expert level) are much greater than in a world where hardly anyone can use magic, or has to go through a great deal of effort for little effect.
To be fair, we live in a world where (at least for purpose of people visiting this site) most people have access to more computer power then super-computers used to have, just laying in their pockets.
And well, looking at cute
ponycat pictures online is a bit more common, then say, protein folding simulations. No doubt it would be plausible for the setting for gender-bender spells to exist, mind you, but I severely doubt it’s something any journeyman would-be spell slinger can pull off in an afternoon. More like the sort of thing you need to consult an expert for.
Eeyup.
