I hadn’t thought about this new wrinkle on the new episode until now, but this comment made me realize something. First, the comment is, I think, not entirely true. Trixie was a jerk in Boast Busters but far from all bad. She was boastful and showy, but not aggressive to anyone until Rarity (mostly) and the others started heckling her for being boastful and showy, in her show. It seems like it was her real personality too, but they couldn’t have known that at the time. And then, what really made her sympathetic, even knowing that she had never actually defeated an Ursa Major, she still tried to defeat one in order to protect Ponyville. She was completely ineffective and ran after giving it her best and failing (and about to be killed), but all the other ponies except Twilight ran first. And it was their town; Trixie was just somewhat, indirectly, responsible. She still didn’t run from it.
 
Which brings me back to the new observation: risking likely death for appearance’s sake wasn’t exactly new to Trixie in No Second Prances. She may not have completely thought out how she was going to get out of it alive, as she had previously given no thought to how she might actually defeat an Ursa, but doing something reckless and dangerous in order to impress the ponies of Ponyville wasn’t anything new to her. It doesn’t mean she actually wanted to die. (In this case, I think sadness probably did make her less concerned that she might. Until the very end of her flight into the manticore where it sunk in that she very likely, rather than possibly, would.)

Ok then, but the person I was replying to seemed to use it as a point against the episode, which is something you should never do, regardless of your interpretation.

It’s not so much lies as it is a different interpretation of trixie’s motives for going through with the stunt. It certainly felt like a suicide attempt the first time I watched it but now I believe she just had hope that starlight would come back and didn’t want to back down in front of the audience.
 
There’s no way that the staff intended it to be a suicide attempt but I don’t see anything wrong with that interpretation besides it being a bit too grimdark for this show.

If one were somehow able to survey the entire adult fanbase, I suspect a plurality of people would agree with your position, though maybe not a majority. (And the only thing I remember Starlight Glimmer doing that was clearly wrong was casting that spell on Big McIntosh; her actions the rest of the episode weren’t always perfect, but they were at least not bad.)

I think most people agree all three were in the wrong yes?

She lied about being the most powerful unicorn in Equestria, and vanquishing an ursa major (which must be about the most powerful creature in the world, able to give Dragon Lord Torch a good fight). That’s one little lie?  

 
Shining Armor obviously has more talent than Trixie does, for one. Trixie is above-average but certainly no prodigy.

She called everyone who didn’t believe her lies ignorant and called Twilight a (and by extension, all the Ponyville citizens) a little hayseed when she’d said nothing at all to Trixie at that point.
 

 
Nothing Trixie did in Boast Busters at all made her a sympathetic character.
 

 
Well, clearly Twilight didn’t entirely trust her yet.
 
I like to think she’s having Starlight stay at the castle specifically because she doesn’t entirely trust her yet. There, she can keep a close eye on her. Unlike you, however, I can keep my headcanon separate from what’s actually been stated in the show.
