Well, even if you disregard the prequel comic where she displays her magical abilities, she was still Celestia’s student, so we can probably assume from that fact that she knew her way around magic, don’t you think?
 
Oh, also Sunburst had said in “The Crystalling” that, despite being learned in magic, he wasn’t a great magical performer, so we’re taking into account both magical knowledge AND power here.

How do you know that Sunset Shimmer is very magical? Starlight, Twilight, Sunburst, Moondancer and Trixie are so Magical but we don’t know ANYTHING about Sunset Shimmer’s Magic… And how do YOU know?
