I have some similar sentiments, although I see her closer to being like an older S1 Rainbow Dash, which would explain why she can be such a base breaker for people now. She’s basically what Rainbow would become if she’d never met Twilight, Fluttershy, or the others: a good pony at the core, but it’s buried under a harsh exterior. Some people seem to forget Dashie could be kind of a bitch in the first season and a half. Some of her behavior wasn’t better than some of than some of Spitfire’s jerkier moments. In fact, back when I started watching FIM five years ago Rainbow was my least favorite pony. But then she ended up going through some major character development and started explicitly showing that underneath all that attitude she’s actually a really sweet pony and as early as late season two and season three she did a complete 180 for me and went on to become my favorite character in the series.

I see Spitfire as a pony who hasn’t had a relationship in her life that’s as strong as what Rainbow Dash has with the rest of the Mane 6, or with Scootaloo. Dashie may be filling that void, especially now that she’s an official teammate, but development like that is working for Spitty more slowly. Personally, I’d love to see an episode where Spitfire tells Rainbow Dash that she’s jealous of what she has going for her, though we’d probably never get one. It seems the writers Spitfire’s important enough to show up at least once every season, but not enough for that level of character progression; though I’d love to be wrong.
