Agreed: IMHO, saying that ponies and horses are not the same is like saying terriers and retrievers are not dogs.
Incorrect.
Horses and ponies are the same subspecies: Equus ferus caballus. By definition a pony is a breed of horse below a specific average height (the precise measurement varying with the association you ask.)
Similarly, wolves are Canis lupus and domestic dogs are a subspecies thereof, Canis lupus familiaris.
The only reason we don’t call dogs wolves (p.s. some people do) is because these are all common English terms with their own connotations that don’t follow a consistent system. Horse and pony are roughly synonymous in normal English usage as the only difference is how cute they’re considered, whereas dog and wolf are not as wolf connotes wild ruggedness and dog connotes tameness and loyalty.
But scientifically, they are the same thing.
Edited because: Typo in sciencey name
They’re still in the same equine family.
No wonder it’s called My Little Pony.
Yeah, My Pretty Pony lasted about a year in the early 80’s and was then reborn as My Little Pony. I wasn’t aware the originals were so huge LOL
@Lucky Shot
Bless you both, guys: I was completely ignorant about all this MPP toy line. Always glad to learn new things.
i Think that Hasbro just think that My Pretty Pony is just a Predecessor of My Little Pony, and so it probably just a Generation 0 Of My Little Pony.
Edited
Hasbro doesn’t consider My Pretty Pony to exist, at least not as a part of My Little Pony. Their official debriefing explaining the brand to potential investors completely ignores MPP in its history and cites the first year the MLP name was used as the beginning of the franchise.
Before Hasbro change their name to “My Little Pony”, they actually call “My Pretty Pony” (more girlish if you ask me) and they make the toy pretty large, here the comparison “My Pretty Pony.” and “My Little Pony Generation 1.”
So “My Little Pony” for me is just a naming for the toy that alot smaller than the original “My Pretty Pony.”
Edited
But then they’re not little ponies
we have our own headcanon, and i just like to put normal pony as the size of the Shetland Pony, luna as the size of the average horse, and celestia atleast larger than average horse or even the size of Clyde.
Edited
Here’s where I got the idea from.
@CyanLightning
I did some estimations a while back and while I don’t remember how I came to this I concluded that Applejack (my guideline for a completely average pony) is about 29 inches (~73.6cm) at the shoulder.
This would put Celestia at a shoulder height I consider “a normal horse”.

Horse
I’m a pinkie horse
And I dance dance dance and I dance dance dance
I didn’t say it three times, though.
Did someone say mods?
Well, I’m not a mod, but I really don’t think it should be an issue.
Close enough to my headcanon, too.
Ah, I thought all photographs showing any kind of animal non-private parts - not just the sword - were banned in several countries and decided to proceed like this. I got that wrong and decided to be too restrictive. Thanks for the heads-up.
