It’s far more likely she started shortly before Twilight did (since the movie says that) and went trough the portal shortly after the series started, since she knew who the element holders are, and that Twilight had the element of Magic. She couldn’t possibly have known that unless the events of the series premiere happened before she left. And we know she must have known because otherwise she’d have had no reason to split up the element holders’ human counterparts.  
The most likely scenario is her learning under Celestia happened alongside Twilight’s, just separate. It also makes perfect sense for Celestia to have more than one student. She knew the time of Nightmare Moon’s escape was approaching, and why would she put all her eggs in one basket?  
And as for the sirens, the the movie shows them being transported with a different portal (one formed in the sky, not the mirror), so theirs are the only ones where a time difference would logically be involved.

Just because the comic has now non canon elements doesn’t make the entire thing non canon. The thing about Sunset being older was obviously a choice they made, and since being a student of Celestia takes so long, Sunset was likely a student for quite a number of years. At least long enough to unlock her own teleport, which still only Twilight (and the other princess’((and Alicorn amulet Trixie)) and her can do.
 
As for the portal, there would seem to be some time shenanigans happening there, as other comics show Babs as the same age as Applejack. Not to mention the whole when-the-Sirens-were-banished thing…
 
But where the characters are now in the movies suggest they are the same age (hence the time shenanigans ((it’s magic))

“That’s so sweet! But I thought you liked Cadance…”
 
“I don’t think that’s going anywhere. She probably doesn’t even know my name.”
 
“Ouch. Well, if it helps, I’m not going anywhere.”
 
Years later, this conversation would earn them both a fine for excessively unsubtle irony. Neither paid; Shining had diplomatic immunity and Sunset’s notice couldn’t be delivered.

They’re cute together, but I don’t want to break up Shining and Cadance. Maybe they were an item before Sunset went through the mirror, and he managed to win Cadance over later, after Sunset had left. Or is that too contrived?

There is something about ponies wearing scarves that I find attractive.

There’s no actual reason to believe she’s any/much older than Twilight. The movie said she started her studies around the same time (Celestia’s exact words were ‘not long before’). And based on the mirror she seems to be around the same age as the rest of them, not likely off by more than a year.  
The only thing that implies she’s a lot older is a non-canon comic that contradicts the established canon (as it also shows Twilight’s Canterlot friends as being older than her while the show has them the same age)

I like it, it’s interesting, but kinda subtracts from Sunset as a person.

Headcanon: Sunset became jealous of Cadance when Shining Armor fell in love with her and wanted to become a princess because that’s what she thought would impress Shining.

Weirdly enough, since Sunset was older than Twilight, they are actually close enough in age…
