This, certainly. Everyone keep in mind the infinite amount of universes: there are some where Twilight and company were never born, thus dooming them anyway–but also some where the villains never existed, either, thus rendering it moot, and some where other heroes took the place of the Mane 6, etc. Literally everything and everything that can happen, has.

It didn’t render it impossible. Imagine in this AU Sunset stayed in Equestria. Twilight never became a friendship student, because Sunset was redeemed earlier.
Yes, but in theory it could be any main six, it doesn’t have to be Twilight and friend specifically. As long as they’re connected in some way(Indigo Zap replaces Rd in this AU, so the rainboom would’ve happened, just with Indigo.), and are the elements of harmony, it would work. They’re just a different mane six, but it would still hold everything together.

The show’s Mane Six are what kept everything together. If they went, so would Equestria (Especially with a good example known as The Ashlands timeline).
