At the moment this seems like a worse thing than it really is, honestly.
Have you ever sat there and looked up some of the editorials a lot of people write about anime?
Like this little gem?
Frankly, the west has very, very stupid ideas about what should go into animation and we’d have people shitting bricks left and right if anime became a big deal over here. The higher ups, really only caring about net profit at the end of the day, will constantly change it to appeal to the western market more and more and more. They wouldn’t want to risk losing money because of controversy so lots of things would end up getting chopped and replaced and changed to make it more suitable for the west. You can even see the stupid impact that western culture has on its own works of animation - remember that stupid Derpy voice thing a while back in MLP? How would anime being actually subjected to that sort of thing work out?
Really, I want to keep anime as it is, more or less, free from that sort of thing that’s so prevalent on this side of the planet. The argument that “We should be able to support it if we want!” is nice and all, but it’s really only a short term feel-good thing. If it becomes too much then it might as well kill anime, or at least bastardize it to the point where it’s being held at gunpoint to stay in an animation ghetto like Western Animation has been in all of these years.
You’re not looking at things in the long-term enough. Short-term is horrible and omg we can’t get these products, but I think that keeping it away from being able to attain that sort of reach and therefore preserving the medium is much more important than whether or not somebody can purchase a 50 dollar disc that they can stick inside of a player of some kind to watch 4 episodes of anime.
