It’s kind of weird how arrows drop in A Link to the past before you even get the Bow.

So, Chuggaaconroy never made it past the second dungeon in A link to the past when he originally played the game because he had so much trouble with the boss and never even noticed the rocks shooting out whenever one of the Lanmolas emerged.

I thought that boss was easier then the previous one, or the one after it.  
The Armos Knights are kinda hard, until you memorize their pattern, or learn the dungeon’s item is their weakness.

You can also kill each Lanmola with only two hits from the Ice Rod, but it’s very difficult to actually hit them with that.

I know we already talked about this, but HOO BOY, imagine how much trouble he’s going to have with Moldorm and some of the Dark World bosses, as well as the Ice Palace…

Yeah. He stated that he will being going in blind after this point. I’m sure he aware of Moldorm’s reputation though.

Apparently, he just never noticed the rocks hurting him until Jon finally pointed that out.

I always noticed them, guess some players don’t notice sense their rock sprites are quite small.

I didn’t know that ice rod trick, I did know about the bug-catching net trick with Agahnim. (How do you pronounce that name anyways?)

Moldorm in the Tower of Hera was quite annoying, not because it kills you easily, it’s much worse… Everytime it nocks you off a ledge, you fall to the boss entrance room, a floor below, resulting in basically the boss recovering all it’s hit-points, basically restarting the battle again!  
Hope you didn’t break all those heart pots in front of the boss room door.
 
On that note, Moldorm is much easier in the games afterwards. I liked it’s redesigns in the 3DS games though.

I played through the GBA version and moldorm was pretty much the same. I don’t even know how many times it took me to finally beat him without getting knocked off the platform.

I don’t know who it was that described the Moldorm from A Link Between Worlds as looking like a hamburger (I’m pretty sure it was in a Youtube video), but now I can’t unsee it.

Helmasaur King is also a pretty difficult boss because of how tight the room is (especially in the GBA verseion with the reduced screen size).
 
Although, despite the fact that bombs break his mask faster, I had an easier time using the Magic Hammer to do it.

What’s interesting is that, although A Link to the Past was the first Zelda game to start the “Dungeon Item is the boss’s weakness” tradition, a lot of the bosses don’t actually have this.
 
In fact, the only boss to ACTUALLY require the dungeon item with no alternate ways of defeating it is Arrghus. The rest either have different ways to beat them or don’t use the dungeon item at all.
 
In fact, the Fire Rod is used against the most bosses (very helpful against Mothula, and required to beat Kholdstare and Trinexx).

Doesn’t the Turtle Rock boss require the ice and fire rods though?

Yes (that would be Trinexx), but my point still stands about the Fire Rod being the most-used item against bosses.

You guys talking about ALttP so much convinced me to give it another run through. (Thank God for browser-based emulators.) What really stands out to me from a modern perspective is how many items are required to complete the game that aren’t part of the main quest line. Like how you need the Flute to reach Misery Mire or the Ice Rod to complete Turtle Rock. There are a couple of characters to clue you in if you’re paying attention, but nowadays they’d probably give you step-by-step instructions complete with flashing X’s on the map.
 
Incidentally, I discovered the Ice Rod’s effectiveness against the Lanmolas for myself this time through, when Sahasrahla mentioned the cave off Lake Hylia after beating the Eastern Palace. Subtle hints.

You also need the Ether Medallion to access Misery Mire and the Quake Medallion to access Turtle Rock.
 
The Bombos Medallion, however, is not required. And there are still several items that aren’t required at all (like the Cane of Byrna and Magic Cape).

Speaking of, I thought it was interesting that the Piece of Heart that requires the Magic Cape also requires the Hookshot, but you can get the Cape first by using the Magic Mirror in the graveyard. That sign out front wasn’t completely accurate.

Oh yeah, I forgot that you could get the Magic Cape that way. I’m pretty sure in my playthrough of the GBA version a few years ago, I forgot about this and didn’t get the Magic Cape until I got the Titan’s Mitt.
 
I don’t remember about THAT either.

Also, Arrows seem to do some damage to Lanmolas as well. It’s not as obvious as the sword since there’s no flash.

The magic powder is probably one of the most useful items in a link to the past, especially when you are in a room with anti-fairies.

All I can remember doing with the magic powder is throwing it on buzz blobs.
 

…You know, I never watched TRG’s Four Swords Adventures or Tri-Force Heroes LPs. I should watch those before starting on their ALttP LP.

Apparently you can use it on the little bastards on Death Mountain. Turns them into slimes that actually die.

I thought only the Quake Medallion did that to them.
 
Of course they’re much easier to deal with in A Link Between Worlds, where you can kill them with the Hammer after they turn to stone.
