Naming Background Ponies Thread!

We need to advertise this thread somewhere where everyone can see it. I guess most users don’t even know we’ve got forums.
 
So there are name suggestions coming in past this thread again, this time for one of the remaining unnamed friendship students:

A note on naming characters with accent marks
 
Ok, I’m just now noticing / remembering this, but is it possible for us to stop using name suggestions that incorporate accent marks on letters? Or include unaccented version of the letters as a searchable alias?

Reason:  
It’s not easy, sometimes physically impossible, to type the accent marks.
 
I know the search function is already kinda anal, which is fine for misspellings and stuff, but it also distinguishes accent marks. And unless you have a specific keyboard input or you find the accented letter and copy-paste it, you don’t have a way to type it; some phones have a way to do it if you know where to look, and if your computer has a specific keypad, if you happen to know the coding for it you can type it (which requires memorizing it, but I’m on a laptop for which it doesn’t work anyway).
 
So for example, “Bifröst” cannot be used in the search unless you specifically include the umlaut over the “o”.
 
 
How it could be / has been a problem  
I didn’t realize this until I was looking for an OC and their comic series some weeks ago and nothing I typed could find them. Finally I went to the artist and asked if they could upload their comic on Derpibooru so it’d be easier to pick through, sort, and save the images. They said they had been uploaded… but they use accent marks in the title and/or character names. And it’s been more difficult in remembering and finding them.
 
And now I’m realizing there’s at least one, if not a few names that were made using some accent marks.

Usually if there is accent marks/diacritics we alias in the “standard” version. For bifröst there was a single tagged image with the bifrost version of the tag, so I just aliased it in.
 
See pokemon, for example.
 
If you see other characters with hard-to-search names, mention it in the characterization thread or something.

pina colada and mjolna both have the common spelling aliased in already so you can just use those.

Makes sense for canon characters, at least. But then you get to OCs like oc:💚 and oc:mkam’kkaƥurasha (the latter is mine, and the lack of a ƥ is mostly mitigated by the lack of OCs with names starting with “mka”)

I think you misunderstood a little bit.
 
I directly copy-pasted what you typed for your OC, and nothing shows up in the results. Whatever accent mark or letter character you’re using, my device doesn’t even register it’s existence.
 
So I am physically unable to even see any images of your OC while I’m searching for that tag.
 
 
oc:💚 seems to be just a tag used and uploaded by the owner or the artists they commission. Anyone can create new tags (within reason). As far as I know, there’s no rule against OC:__ whatever as long as it follows regular rules.
 
What people want to tag their OC with is their choice. If the owner wants them to be difficult or impossible to find, that’s up to them, but canonical character names we choose should be accessible. If an alias bland-English version associated with the character tag works for that, then that’s what we can do.

Huh. It appears ƥ breaks the search somehow, maybe the search system interprets it as a break character? But it works when typed from the tag page, and a search for sweetie belle || saddle || fallout || midriff || trixie's cape || star wars || ƥ || taco works exactly as expected… (and now I want something that’ll show up for sweetie belle, saddle, fallout, midriff, trixie's cape, star wars, taco…)

It’s not a site problem, it’s a universal code problem.
 
My device, i.e. this Motorola phone I’m using, with the Chrome mobile browser, is not coded to detect or show the character you’re typing. So all I see is: “Huh. It appears breaks the search somehow.” There’s literally a blank space my phone interprets as an extra space. It knows there’s a character there, but can’t display it because it doesn’t know what it’s supposed to be. So it displays as a blank box,if at all.
 
So when I copy-paste it into the search, the search query is given a blank box error character. But I also went to my laptop and was able to see the character mark in question, but there are still no images on Derpibooru with that tag.
 
 
That’s partly the problem I’m taking about.
 
When you introduce un-viewable or un-typeable characters in a tag, it becomes much less accessible. Not everyone can type Hungarian letters or Spanish accents and few who can know how unless they specifically use that language.

The character involved is a p with a top hook (ƥ), seems to be largely deprecated, used in a language in Senegal. The link I provided should return an image or two. One should be a birthday game.

It is not an information, you see it is an information when in reality it is not, it is logically edited by yourself. That’s why I trust Disney Wiki and the wikipedia because that is confirmed, not what you do in your own way that does not even present or affect, rightly nobody believes in that, especially writing nonsense in the galleries to each character that is not saying that. that’s not like Disney wiki, the only thing that is not the law is you (don’t pretend that you are not really and you don’t act as if you are the best) you are editing things that are not confirmed or logically. MLP wiki is not official and about Timb is false, it’s not official. You reconsider it yourself. You know what I think, you are depote that is what you are. Look if you like to do your way so fine, it’s your problem.

So after reading this weird-ass rant I went back and read the conversation about the MLP wiki that I missed while I was away from the site. It’s been my intention to gradually alias in the wiki’s names for characters so they work for searching here. You can see the beginnings of that on several of the dragon names, like Prominence and Ballista.
 
If you know of cases where our name differs from the wiki’s name for any characters of note, please PM me and I will set up an alias. But please don’t bother me with some background pony that only appears in the Winter Wrap-Up song montage for 3 frames in shadow from behind and is only tagged on a single 150x320 cropped screencap… Just don’t bother with that sort of thing.

Now am I wrong, or are the wiki names ones created by the people who run it? I seem to recall that being part of the conversation you mentioned, since it was kind of odd to think that their’s were being treated as any more “official” than the ones here.

Placeholder names on the wiki are proposed and voted on in /r/listofponies on Reddit.
