Relax the "2 AI images per day" limit for top AI creators?

TL;DR: I would like to propose relaxing (not eliminating) the upload rate limit for AI creators with a track record of excellent content. Say, raise the limit from 2 images per day to 4, but only for authors with, say, 5 images with scores over 200.

With the release of Easyfluff v11.2 and most recently Pony Diffusion v6, the quality of AI-generated images has improved dramatically. It is now possible to create excellent images with AI-driven tools alone, so they do not qualify for the ai assisted tag. This is evidenced by the numbers of favourites on ai generated images here on derpibooru: the median image of one of the most prominent “prompters” is favourited by over 400 people. Even among my own images - an author of no particular renown - the median number of favourites is 200. And this is despite anything tagged ai generated being hidden in all default filters and excluded from trending! So there is clearly an audience for this type of content.

I fully agree with the need to stem the tide of low-effort, low-quality content, which was the rationale for the “2 images per day” limit. However, also I find the limit of 2 images per day stifling for two reasons:

As a viewer, it pushes me outside Derpibooru and to third-party sites to see more images by my favourite creators. This makes me leave the confines of Derpibooru’s excellent system of tags and filters, and exposes me to content that is unpleasant to me.

As a creator, this gets in the way of connecting me with my audience. There is clearly demand for the kind of content I create - over 200 people have favourited my median image! But under the current limits it would take me several weeks just to upload the images I already have, which I expect to be received equally well, and my backlog keeps growing. For now I simply haven’t posted them, because I prefer to engage with the community through Derpibooru, with its moderation and its system of tags and filters. I don’t want to turn my posts here into glorified ads urging people to follow me on Twitter. But I feel that I eventually will have to, because the Derpi limits are really getting in the way of connecting me with my audience.

I feel relaxing (but not eliminating) the upload limits for people who have demonstrated that their content meets a rather high bar will still stem the tide of low-quality content, without getting in the way of connecting creators with their audiences.

Please note that this is not arguing for inclusion of AI generated images in default filters or the Trending section. All of this is aimed purely at people who have opted in to seeing AI-generated images.

Long answer, we’ve carefully discussed and considered this issue among staff, trying to balance the interest of all users, including those who are vividly opposed to AI. We’re an imageboard focused around art of the My Little Pony fandom community, our historic goal was to praise and support the talent in the fandom, and with the release of AI, many people who lack the classical artistic ability were enabled to produce images that look like something a normal artist would need a decade of experience to match. Many artists on our site feel passionately about this and feel like this invalidates their effort. There’s also the entire issue that almost all of the data for the generative AIs was sourced unethically, without permission of the artists whose art was used to train the machine. With some tweaks, almost every one of these pony or furry AI models is capable of emulating any popular artist’s style in its output images, mostly because it can straight up copy the elements from art it saw. Many artists consider this art theft and a loss of business, and this is why we don’t allow AI generated content which has any artist names in its prompt. However, even without artist names in the prompt, it often ends up copying certain artists more than the others depending on the prompt.

Simply put, while we see that the AI as tech has its merits in enabling certain individuals to produce images that they otherwise would have no chance of seeing, we would like to stay focused on praising the talent and effort of the classical artists. Allowing 2 AI images per day was already a huge compromise for us, with many individuals demanding a full blanket ban of AI stuff, and artists threatening to quit the site if no measures against AI were taken, and we would rather keep artists on the site if we can help it. All of this makes us extremely unwilling to compromise any further. Our current policy will remain for now.

There are imageboards focused exclusively on AI images, which you could consider uploading your stuff to. We have considered launching something similar, however we’ve decided not to so far.

A very strict limit on AI pictures upload can only be of great benefit for both human artists and AI creators, as it protects the former from having their work diluted into an ocean of mass-generated pictures, and nudges the latter into caring more for their generations, selecting only the very best results, and maybe exploring more elaborate ways of using this technology to produce interesting content.

If anything, the limit should be even lower :^)

Why not using the backlog for producing something more elaborate, such as a comic or a wall of pinned Polaroid vacation pictures?

Your concern for people who “lack the classical artistic ability” (read: don’t make the effort to study art or develop their abilities) yet still want to cosplay as artists is very kindhearted, but a bit misplaced. I don’t see how the site owes AI folks anything. Even people drawing stick-figure ponies deserve the respect for actually making an effort.

I have a better idea. Why not just ban AI entirely? Or at least decease the limit to 1 image per day (while only letting logged in users upload AI content).

Which is why people doing this qualify for artist tags and artist-tag-related badges.

This is one of the few places that allow ai content at all… I think it is very forward thinking to allow the image board to accept these pieces.

The daily limit may be strict but it is far more welcoming than a complete ban considering the site has powerful filters that allow users who don’t want to see it, to not see it.

It also encourages AI Directors to curate their own work and try to share their very best first.

Nobody wants to see any single user flood a site.

My best advise.. keep posting here..and improve your work. Grow yourself on another site as well. If you are willing to put in the work, you will get accepted. We can advocate for change, but we first have to show we are willing to work with them and follow the in place rules first. And if anyone shows you hate.. you have rule 0, just do not stoop to their level.

Yes allowing AI is just going to create a slippery slope. What if they only allowed AI generated content and human artists were all banned from posting non-AI art? Okay that may be overexaggerating but unless AI is stopped, which it won’t be stopped, it’s only a matter of time before the vast majority of uploads here are AI content.

There’s already way too much screencap spam here. We don’t need people spamming AI too.
