Taking any “professional” review site seriously is never a good idea. Never forget Kotaku actively encouraged people and showed them how to pirate Metroid Dread. All because Nintendo wasn’t having their bullshit and blacklisted them.
For a series that already struggles to sell well, that’s a really shitty thing to do and Kotaku was already despised by the gaming community. No doubt they’ll pull something similar with Prime 4 and I do not expect that to push 3 million like Dread.

Actually, that was why Nintendo blacklisted them and stopped giving them free review game copies in the first place.
I honestly don’t blame Ninty for that. In fact, that actually upset many Metroid fans, because they want the series to sell good.
3 million sold is still pretty good though, and it’s nice “Dread” is now the best selling Metroid game, especially in Japan, where normally the series isn’t very popular.
Kotaku was apparently upset, and they leaked plot details of “Tears of the Kingdom” early to get revenge on Nintendo. This backfired as it ended up upsetting gamers whom didn’t want to be spoiled, more turning them against Kotaku.
It’s ironic how most “professional” game journalists and review sites act very unprofessional, and petty.
I also don’t get why some of them demonize gamers too, as if they aren’t gamers themselves…
(Reminds me of the “Be a MLP fan, not a brony” elitist MLP fans…)

I’m surprised not many understand that.
“Why aren’t we getting a new StarFox or F-Zero? Nintendu sux fer only giving us Mario and Zelda!”
“Did you buy the last StarFox and F-Zero? Or did you only buy Mario and Zelda instead?”

Critical reception matters to an extent, too. Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, while not a terrible game (honestly its biggest crimes were being a Banjo-Kazooie game and mocking the older games) and sold decently well, has killed the franchise dead.

Yeah, they had a GBA sequel of the anime adaption “GP Legend” game. They didn’t release it outside Japan, because the anime was cancelled in other countries.
I actually liked the F-Zero anime, (even the 4Kids dub) and I even watched the final fan-subtitled episodes that weren’t released outside Japan.
Alot of the characters are very different from the games. Like Octoman is a neutral character, but in the anime he is a bad guy. (He was a villain in his StarFox Command cameo role too.)
@Wiimeiser
I think that was more due to fans not liking that game either, not just critics.

Oh yeah, right. Honestly, I support emulation because there’s no easy way to play a lot of those decades old titles. But for a game that just came out, no.

Yeah, fans really didn’t like it. It changed the gameplay and artstyle too much, and shat on the older games like the AVGN talking about LJN games.

Granted “Banjo Tooie” poked fun at the original game too. (Like the “Missing sense 1998” Tootie milk carton.) So the series has always been humorous and poked fun at itself. So I don’t think it was meaning to insult the old games AVGN style.
Though, I guess they may of gone overboard with some of the dark humor. (Poor Clanker.)
Glad Smash brought back the origial Banjo design. It does have a nod to “Nuts and Bolts” with one of his taunts interestingly.

Hehe to think Peach was almost considered for Punch-Out Wii.
There’s rumors that sadly that might be the last “Mario and Sonic at the Olympics” game for awhile.
Though, I saw an arcade version a few years ago.

People never take kindly you are trying to screw them over specially for things they had no interest nor connection until your BS drag them into it.
Spoiling TotK and trying to financially attack Nintendo with that was never gonna help Kotaku at all, worse, it showcased how spiteful and hateful someone can be just because people are not giving you the thumbs up.
@Mikey
If a game came out and remains on the market, is just good etiquette to buy it, wait for a sale with lower prices if you have to.
Emulation is mostly for old games and specially for games that the original companies are not even bothering with a remake or virtual console sales and are essentially lost media within the regular market.

I think maybe because of religion and politics. Video games were painted as the new “Gateway drugs ticket to hell,” because parents wanted a ‘reason’ kids were not turning into social nuclear family starting butterflies and instead turning suicidal mass shooters. So priest and politician told a fairy tale of a world where there no big bad video games.

In Nintendo’s case which has done really well and can afford losing money yet they have no problems with their heads cutting their own salaries to avoid getting into massive firings, historically speaking I think it’s more a case of pride rather than greed for them. They’re often a bit too defensive of their own intellectual properties and even gave Disney rather strict directions to tell them how Bowser must drink coffee in Wreck-It Ralph and didn’t wanted to get into mobile until much later that other companies. Some people jokingly believe they were holding Illumination Entertainment at gunpoint to get the Super Mario movie like they wanted.
Most other companies can vary, some of them do certainly fall into the greed category and some others just triggerhappy with demands for the law. To be fair the main issue with intellectual property is that abstract ideas are harder to apply copyright than physical objects, the idea is that you get recognition as a creator but many people can be rather jerkish about it.

I don’t know, many religous, and political people nowadays love video games. In fact, the large amount of people critical of “religous fanatics bashing video games” are usually christians themselves.

Even back then some christians actually liked stuff like “Doom.”
Heck, I like the origibal Doom too, and I’m one.
Sadly, that era is slowly creeping back up, as I see some self proclaimed game journalists demonizing game violence, sexy characters, and such too. It’s like Jack Thompson reincarnated.

No, Jack was the attorney (backed by Hilary) who was on an anti-game crusade back in the mid 2000s decade, whom targets GTA, and such. He infamously even got into arguments with Penny Arcade and the author of VGCats for parodying him.
