I feel like this is not going to go well for Republicans.

I know a few right-leaning libertarians that will see this as a betrayal and attempted coercion, and probably respond…poorly.

Pretty obvious there’s not going to be any challenging, only bending the knee for Dear Leader.

The Libertarian Party has been taken over by the paleoconservative mises caucus for quite some time, albeit many of the state parties have resisted the takeover which has led to the situation where the Libertarian Party is split between these two factions

IIRC I’ve made a quip in the past about New Hampshire changing the meaning of “libertarian” to “national-socialist”, or something along those lines.

The problem with an ideology centered around “people should be free to do whatever they want so long as it doesn’t harm others” is that it also appeals to complete sociopaths with no capacity for empathy.

Genuine psychopaths use “good libertarians that trust in people’s natural goodness” as a shield and hollow the movement out until it’s nothing but morons and literal monsters like them.

The House has passed their censorship/Israel protection bill, a bill that requires the Department of Education to - among other things - recognize that “The (definition of antisemitism) includes denying Jewish people their right to self-determination by claiming that the State of Israel is a racist state”. I think the bill still requires a Senate vote before it becomes official, but at this point it’s a formality that it will pass.

So yeah that’s cool. Some states like Texas already bans boycotting Israel on penalty of mandating you lose your job and get on a blacklist, no joke. It sure is awesome that burning the American flag is protected speech but saying a genocide is a genocide isn’t when one’s settler-colonialist project needs coddling.

Yeah, this is fucking bleak, and I have no confidence in this SCOTUS to do the right thing when it inevitably comes before them.

Though I did have to laugh at Marjorie Taylor Greene picking the worst possible reason to vote no (she was one of 21 Republicans to oppose it). She said it’s because the bill adopts a definition of antisemitism that includes saying that the Jews killed Jesus, which according to her is true.

To play devil’s advocate, if the Gospels are to be believed, the decision to arrest and put Jesus on trial was made by the assembly of the Sanhedrin, which after questioning him (including on whether he was the Son of God), sent him to Pontius Pilate and King Herod for further questioning. Pilate eventually left the decision to spare or condemn him to the mob (which was influenced by the chief priests and elders to pick the latter), and then had his men proceed to his flogging and crucifixion.
At any rate, the historical truth is likely that Pilate ended up executing Jesus because he agreed with the leaders of the Temple that Jesus was too much of a threat to the public order to be left alive.

Still a pretty dumb reason to be antisemitic at all though.

Yeah. As a Christian myself, hating on God’s people for that makes no sense, especially since Jesus said he had a hand in said people crucifying him and was part of his plan to help others outside of his people. And if we really want to go down the “Jesus’s Revenge” BS, the Holocaust already happened and they suffered way more than enough to satisfy that dumb mentality. Oh wait, these people are also Holocaust deniers. Maybe they deny it to justify their racism.

The sticking point for the Jewish elders was actually him claiming to be the Messiah and the Son of God, while Pilate and Herod took exception to the Kingdom of Heaven thing — which is why they put a sign deriding him as the “King of Jews” on his cross (again, all according to the Bible).
Of course, the real issue was less about the contents of his teachings than the troubles he and his followers were causing (as far as we can speculate that his triumphal entrance in Jerusalem or the cleansing of the Temple narrated in the Gospels might’ve been based on actual events).

Well, yeah, but I feel like this is going to increase the “might as well vote third party/ abstain from voting” crowd. And I’d rather not have this election come down to the world’s most anxious coin flip where an orange nutcase has still has the chance to take it all.

On the flip side, the The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is currently reclassifying marijuana.
