Don't blame me, I voted for the other guy. (Politics General)

Seeing a lot of takes that anti-trans ads are effective because Trump won. Doesn’t explain why Sarah McBride outran Harris in Delaware.
No real evidence that they ever work.

Elon Musk as in the one guy in the whole USA with a worse business track record than Trump himself?
The guy who can only run a successful business if someone else runs interference between him and said business, AND there’s government money propping it up?
THAT Elon Musk?
Someone give me a Death Note so I can sign my name in it. I don’t want to share a species with tens of millions of people who think that’s how to run a country.

Ken “Popehat” White put out this banger of a retrospective on Donald’s victory. Some takeaways for all who oppose the Orange One.
Excerpt from the section “Fuck Civility”
We’ve all heard that we shouldn’t let politics interfere with friendships. But do people really mean that, sincerely? Do people really think you shouldn’t cut ties with, say, someone who votes for an overt neo-Nazi, or an overt “overthrow the system and nationalize all assets” tankie? I don’t buy it. I think everyone has their own line about where support of — or subservience to — a doctrine is too contemptible to let a civil relationship survive. For most of my life no major party candidate was over that line for me. I have trusted, liked, and respected people who have voted the other way for decades. But whatever my feelings about Trump in 2016 or 2020, Trump in 2024 is definitely over my line.
Furthermore, no civility code or norm of discourse is worth being a dupe. Trump and his adherents absolutely don’t respect or support your right to oppose him. They have contempt for your disagreement. They despise your vote. They don’t think it’s legitimate. The people who voted for him, at a minimum, don’t see that as a deal-breaker. So Trump voters, to the extent they fault you for judging them, have a double standard you need not respect. Part of the way Trumpists win is when you announce “ah well, voting for Trumpists is just a normal difference of opinion, we all share the same basic American values,” while the Trumpists are saying “everyone who disagrees with us is cuck scum, they’re the enemy within.” Stop that nonsense.
I am invited to break bread with people who think my children, by virtue of being born elsewhere, poison the blood of America — or at least with people who think it’s no big deal for someone to say so. I decline. I decline even to pretend to accept or respect the suggestion that I should.

No one is saying it did?
Everyone is just pointing out how seriously butthurt and mad Republicans and the MAGA people et whenever you call them out for the weird shit they do

@Poison Trail
A proof of concept is indeed just a proof of concept, but it does need to be worked on to both be louder to counter disinformation. But it is a good starting point nonetheless. I also wonder if it is because “weird” doesn’t have the same punch as say calling someone a nazi or fascist (thus not grilling up people who sat out or voted out of anti-establishment ness and economic anxiety) though I’m not sure if i can articulate the specifics.
@Dustcan
this.
@Kazapsky
this is under the assumption that its possible the scoutus will allow him to have a third term anyways and doesn’t die before he even gets to third term (or any other complications really). But regardless of which angle you go for its highly unlikely that he will have a third term and i was always under the opinion that i doubt GOP can really live without trump at this point. And if trump is the obama of the right wing, it basically becomes a question of who can fill the post-trump vacuum.

I think people forget that Trump’s “war on the free press” has always been kayfabe because the media has been Trump’s biggest megaphone. Trump loves the media and the media loves him.
When people tune out of the media abd look inward, Trump doesn’t feel very significant anymore. It’s arguably a more effective form of “resistance” than protests have ever been. And that should scare the shit out of him because it makes him more irrelevant than during his first time.

It’s looking like the GOP will have a 5 seat majority in the next Congress. A much thinner House majority than when Trump first entered the White House.
If he’s hoping for Obamacare repeal round two or welfare/spending cuts to help finance his tariffs, or increase the nuclear weapons supply in the next defense budget…well, good luck with that.

Wow, when is the last time I have been here? Two years! Wow, time flies.
Exit polling is interesting but is a fickle measure that isn’t always a reliable indicator of anything. That being said, I am inclined to believe it with… well, stuff like this I don’t think it is the level of doom and gloom that some Democrats are projecting, there was still plenty of split ticket voting and these new cohorts that Trump got into the Republican party maybe a bit unstable voters. Still, at the moment, Trump has defied the Republican party being just a party that turns out some combo of older people and hopes for the Democrats to not turn out everyone else. It is not generationally doomed. I hope y’all are doing okay, as I known this thread leans pretty left.
@Zaknel
It did get under their (un, our, I am still a Republican even if I have some Trump skepticism) skin. I do agree that Democrats overplayed it without having any compelling “cool” traits, so it comes off as “ewwwww your icky” in a way that can make them just look out of touch. If I was a Democrat I would keep it around but not blindly use it on everyone.

Some people are trying to blame Jill Stein, and not the fact that Harris got 15 MILLION fewer votes than Biden.

As of now it’s looking like a 5 seat GOP majority, 4 if Michelle Steel collapses. As I’ve said before this is a much smaller majority than in his first term and that’s gonna make it difficult if not impossible to get most of his agenda - especially Obamacare repeal and his budget cuts - through.
Mostly because a lot of Dem voters in safe states didn’t bother showing up.

Less addressing and more communicating to people, honestly. They had that whole infrastructure and investment stuff. And thanks to that and other factors, the post covid era inflation has finally gotten tamed. New terrible policies might undo that all. But people don’t think.

Sounds like the Dems are already gathering around “we went too far left” and are getting ready to abandon LGBTQ rights, but we won’t know for sure for another month or two.
