It’s loss aversion. They have two of the most valuable IPs in history, and so losing those would be mentally catastrophic for them. So much so that if you distributed that trauma across the global population, there would be over 8 billion people with PTSD.

I honestly don’t think they’re as bad as some people say, (still plenty of fan games and such online they haven’t gone after) but I don’t deny sometimes Nintendo goes overboard…

Meanwhile, they oddly allow and sponser many blatant rip offs of their games on the Eshop. Saw a blatant StarFox nock off in there too with a raccoon hero who’s model looks almost exactly like a traced Fox McCloud and even had an axolotl sidekick that looks like Slippy Toad.
Surprising Nintendo allowed that, though maybe they figured it gets StarFox fans to stop begging them to make a new StarFox.

To be fair, Nintendo doesn’t usually target ripoffs. They’re almost cool characters are not directly under the same names and designs. Almost, except for Pokemon.

Actually, they’ve allowed many Pokemon rip off games on their platforms including some on Gameboy Color, I remember. Though, arguably monster raising is a genre itself, and Dragon Quest did it before Pokemon kinda.

I went to Firehouse Subs for lunch and saw they had a Thanksgiving sandwich with turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing, so I had to get it. I’m glad I did. It was delicious. Totally better than Arby’s fried turkey sandwich.
