Yeah, I agree that that’s a weak criticism. It just means that the bands know how to merchandise themselves well.

The main issue I usually hear is that it has really dumb saving and inventory systems (later games have similar issues with those but are still considered better than the first one), but apart from that it’s not TOO bad from what I hear (and I believe the remake fixed those issues anyway).

In fairness, Kiss really aren’t that great, but that’s not because they know how to market themselves, it’s just because their music is kind of meh.

Same. They knew how to craft good hooks, but apart from that, they kind of seemed like your typical, “meh” ‘70s rock band. It’s only because of their makeup, stage shows, and constant marketing that they managed to become the cultural phenomenon that they are.

I kinda can agree, except that for me is about twelve, and almost all of them are either from Dynasty or their debut album.

Kiss removing their makeup in the ’80s was a mistake.

The makeup and costumes, that was their brand, their most outstanding feature, what set them apart from other rock bands. Removing that was a bad decision just from a marketing standpoint.
 
Also, I don’t want to be insulting, but without the makeup… they weren’t really the most handsome bunch? Like, Paul Stanley and maybe Eric Carr were the only ones who could really pull it off. The rest of the members… yeahhh, no. Especially Gene Simmons. Yikes.

Have you listened to their hair metal songs from the late 80’s and early 90’s? It’s awful. Thank goodness for their revival in the late 90’s that got them back to basics.

They felt like one of the few American Glam bands that you can look back on without thinking that they were uncomfortable with their gimmick

Crappy music video aside, “Lick It Up” was pretty good and their cover of “God Gave Rock and Roll to You” was alright (even if I prefer the original). But apart from that, yeesh.
 
It’s a shame, too, because Eric Carr (their second drummer who was hired in 1980 after Peter Criss jumped ship) was a really great drummer and his talents would have been better suited on harder rock songs. R.I.P.

With all these old ‘80s sounds coming back, I think the next logical step is for glam metal and glam rock to make a comeback.
