To answer the question: no. I check the big sites (that I know of) to hunt down new content, but I don’t bother with the communities. Even if I really cared to, I just have the time.
Anyways, here’s how
I remember things going down:
Around the time PB started accepting NSFW content (yes, PB was originally a SFW-only board), pony content exploded on FA. Known furry artists started doing loads of pony art, leaving other things behind (which left many of those artists’ followers that didn’t care for MLP feeling alienated) and many new artists popped up posting their pony stuff there; combined it seemed like FA was getting spammed by pony.
Back to PB (and other places), FA content started appearing. Now back then pony NSFW was
a lot more taboo than it is now, and, well, a decent portion of stuff on FA is pretty fetish heavy (vore, gore, inflation, fat, etc). So the sudden surge of both NSFW and fetish content that could be tracked back to furry artists caused a pretty heavy anti-furry reaction. This image got a whole lot of use:
Back to FA; the surge in pony content made many artists start posting anti-pony content as a reaction, mostly of the violent and gory variety. Amusingly some of the worst offenders in that category are now heavily into MLP (and to be fair, a lot of artists that started with pony now only do “normal” furry). So, that stuff got spread around, of course, which only increased the anti-furry sentiment.
Also on the side, there were furry people evangelizing that we’re all the same fandom, either to calm people down, or to gain more artists and “clout” or something. Anyways, that was seen by many MLP fans as an insult and the reaction was to spew some more hate to make sure people wouldn’t confuse the two communities.
Things are a lot calmer these days, anyways. A lot of really well known and liked MLP artists do some furry stuff and no one really cares, and a lot of primarily furry artists do MLP stuff and don’t get any hate for it. Don’t know how much that’s carried over to non-artsy stuff.
