I guess that’s the way that guy sees it.
This is getting absurd.
Her trying to help Dash in her own way is now self absorbed.
It doesnt help when this is a FF comic, where the duo (or trio in this case) should get generally equal attention. The Cakes felt more like a plot device.
Well to be fair, Rarity pretty much always soaks in Spotlight and attention, she’s one of the show’s biggest scene stealers.
Rarity was trying to help Rainbow Dash learn history in a way that helped herself remember and care about the history… her means of doing so was no more selfish or self absorbed than Twilight using what she loved and what worked for her, Fluttershy putting on a pet play that catered to her own interests and so on. They all tried to help in a way that most resonated with each of them, hoping since it worked for them it would work for Dash. Nothing selfish about that.
Fashion shows aren’t just about personal glory, and in the real world aren’t “contests” at all. They’re how designers and companies showcase their work and obtain business… they’re critical in the industry. Rarity tried to do a kind and generous thing to help someone and was taken advantage of, having what amounts to a part of her livelihood stolen from her. Her friends were working for her to try to get a second entry ready for the show done in time so she could still have a chance to do something, and in the end she did feel bad about working them so hard and being so nasty in light of the stress she was under that she was fully prepared to give up on what amounted to a huge career opportunity just to apologize and try to make it up to them. She was fully prepared to make a huge personal and professional sacrifice for them, and didn’t even think twice about the decision.

I’m mostly talking about the fact that she and the others saved all of Equestria yet again at the end of last season (literally galloping/flying over the entire area and restoring the magic to the various pony races while in rainbow power form). And the fact that they now have thrones and serve as ambassadors (as the trading cards put it) of their respective elements. While you’re right and that doesn’t necessarily make her a household name and adored on the same level that some celebrities are, what I was getting at was what soundtea touched on, in that at this point in the show Rarity being so enamored with fame just feels like an outdated interpretation of her character. Like how her old character synopsis on merch and stuff said that her dream was to someday design for Princess Celestia, but at this point she’s on a first-name basis with royalty and has her own throne in a castle… the show’s kinda just grown past that at this point, IMO.
The fame she has, using Rarity Takes Manehatten, is that she’s well known among fashion industry experts in Equestria (a more realistic expectation and one that definitely helps her career), but she would like to be household name (“the pony everypony should know”), which is more a daydreaming-type goal and likely never to happen, but she wants those moments.
Is there an episode I missed in season 4 where someone from outside of Ponyville recognizes her due to her fame? It’s been a while since I’ve watched them all, but I remember “her not being famous yet” being a common complaint in discussions, along side “CMC don’t have their marks yet”.
It still doesn’t make sense with her saying “I’m going to be famous” though when she already is.
Your comment only mention being self absorbed and “bitch mode”, not ambition.
Her friend needed help learning history and she put on a fashion show. A very “Rarity” thing to do, even if it is meant to be helpful.
And her designs being stolen don’t excuse her behavior. She wasn’t getting help from her friends to make her feel better or to bring Suri to justice for wronging her, she was using them to win a contest.
Still feels like a retread of Suited for Success/Sweet and Elite. Not helping that Rarity seemed to soak more spotlight than the Cakes, with them being mainly there to bail her out. And the only thing after this is… the freaking bat issue.
Whitley’s arc better be good.
The thing here is that she didn’t go out of her way to get the fame - the meeting with Touring Wind was happenstance, and Touring brought the idea of featuring the Rarity/Cakes business in her magazine. The Rarity of old only came out when she realized that (for her) she had to up-class the wedding as pull double-duty.
Simple Ways isnt self absorbed as much as her going too hard on adoration. Trade Ya didnt have her being too ambitious, and Testing Testing was more everyone not figuring out how to teach Dash right. And she was more in a slump in Inspiration before the book.
This Rarity in the comic just feels like an old relic you’d see in S1 or S2. This far out in the show timeline it feels off.
One of the future season 5 episodes coming up is “Canterlot Boutique”, it will be interesting to see if Rarity’s fame (or lack thereof) will be addressed.
@soundtea
Don’t forget Simple Ways, Trade Ya!, Testing Testing, and Inspiration Manifestation (even before the spellbook).
Post S4 at the very least, so this is already past all the old stuff.
By now, self absorbed Rarity feels old and tired. This is something you’d expect in Season 1 or 2. RTM was the last time we really saw her go bitch mode of her own accord, and that was because her designs got stolen.
They are post S4 - Twilight has her castle. But we don’t know how much S5 overlap there is yet.
Have the comics entered the season 5 time-frame yet, or are they still in the ambiguous void between season 4 and 5?
The characterization of Rarity wanting to be famous doesn’t really work for her character anymore though, because she is famous at this point in the show.
Hickey’s art is so good!
