Indeed, the snooping reference. :)
The best villains typically are. Filmation!Skeletor, Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor, many a Disney villain, Discord and The Dazzlings, of course are worth mentioning, considering the site we’re on, Q, the list goes on. I’ve even seen TV Tropes label Baron Vladimir Harkonnen of all villains as Laughably Evil, but since I haven’t read the book, can’t back that one up with any proof.
Y’mean, the “snooping” reference? ;)
Indeed, I kinda like villains like that who are silly/funny, yet can also be taken seriously sometimes, and still be threatening, and have a dark side to them. I like that confusing thing about them if you wonder if it’s ok to find them funny, and even kinda like them, despite all the horrible things they do.
Also, turning animals into robots like he did in the earlier games is kinda dark, and cruel to when you think about it. The cartoons/comics even took this a step further, where he had a machine that could literally turn them into robots.
Yeah, the Robotnik in the comics was a complete monster, who also happened to be funny (humming “E.G.G.M.A.N.” to himself; an obvious AoStH reference while going out of his mind). He was also fairly dark in Sonic ’06 (threatening to destroy the entire city of Soleanna to get a hold of Elise) but, eh heh, I think the general populace is agreed ‘06 was hardly the franchise’s finest hour.
Also nearly destroying the planet in Unleashed, all to awaken an ancient dark god to obey him.
Yeah, shame about the SatA.M. game, (but judging from the only footage of it in existence on Youtube, it looked more like a pseudo-Metal Gear-ish game with some “arcade brawler” style gameplay, as opposed to being a Sonic game. It didn’t look like it featured Sonic’s trademark speed at all, which is probably why Sega nixed it.)
I guess I do kinda miss the name “Robotnik” to, but I’m not to bothered by the name change anymore.
Some fans thought it was a bit OOC of Eggy to try to hurl Dr. Light to his doom, even Wiley was horrified by that, but if you look at not just the old comics, but the games, Eggman while a silly/comical villain does have a “dark side,” and isn’t above killing. Let’s not forget in the games alone he did try to murder Sonic on a space station, hold Amy at gun-point, (stating if Sonic didn’t come “she would die!”) threatening to kill millions within the president’s country, and also blew up Prison Island. (It was heavily implied there were humans there.) And all of that in ONE game.
Let’s not forget other things like when he tried to nuke Station Square. (Even if it meant killing himself.) Eggman at times is almost as silly-yet-dark as the Joker from Batman.
Even to the point where himself from the past questions his own sanity.
And that crossover with Mega Man where he worked with fellow mad scientist Doctah Wahwee in the Archie comics, I believe? Then again, he screwed up that one himself by trying to kill Dr. Light against Wily’s wishes.
@Beau Skunky
It couldn’t have been as hand-wavey and mildly insulting to those who prefer the name Robotnik as it was done in Sonic Generations. “Nobody calls me THAT anymore!” Right…
That Sega Sonic Arcade tidbit reminds me of how they were planning to make a SatAM game, but it was canned. Ah, what could’ve been…
Surprisingly, during that Bowser refers to himself by his old name “King Koopa” at the beginning of it. Nowadays, that’s as shocking as them name-dropping “Robotnik.”
Y’know, hackers found unused sprites in the “Sega Sonic Arcade” game’s data that were of the Americanized SatA.M./early-Archie Robotnik design implying they were going to use them in the American release of the game. (Though, I think the game ended up only released in Japan.)
But it’s funny seeing him get crazier & crazier as he does. Also, do not leave out the Olympic Games story modes where he teams up with Bowser.
Oh, forgot about that one; haven’t played that one. Then again, close but no world-conquest cigar.
It almost worked in Sonic Rush, though.
Or maybe it’s a potential team up? And what a hair-raising partnership it will be. I mean it worked soooo well for him in SA2, Sonic Generations and Sonic Lost World. Eh, fourth times’ the charm, right?
