I think I mentioned that theme. Musical cues from SMRPG also appeared in the first Mario Party game, (Bowser’s Magma Mountain has a bit of “Bowser’s Keep” in it) and “M&L: Superstar Saga” has “Mario’s Pad” theme in it. (In fact, the M&L games has the same music composer as SMRPG.)

Hackers also found text that were music titles for a few unused/removed songs in SSB Brawl. One of them was titled “Beware the Forest Mushrooms” which is the official name for the “Forest Maze” theme in SMRPG.

I assume the characters were only meant to appear in the SMRPG canon, but sense Square/Enix went PS1-exclusive during the N64 days, they couldn’t do a real SMRPG2 game. And sense Square basically made the game, and new characters, they own half the game.

The first “Paper Mario” (N64) was originally titled “Super Mario RPG 2” before it’s release. SMRPG2 was on “upcoming N64 games” lists even before the N64 was released, so a sequel was always planned, but canned, and retooled into “Paper Mario.” (Also, early screenshots showed Nep-Enut, and Poochy from “Yoshi’s Island” were going to be in the game originally, but removed.)

Still, nowadays maybe Nintendo & Square/Enix feel SMRPG is to “obscure/forgotten” nowadays (regardless of having a “Virtual Console” rerelease, even in countries where it wasn’t originally released) and people wouldn’t recognize the characters from it. This is probably why they don’t use said characters anymore.

The “fortune teller” characters in the “Paper Mario” series however do look alot like the “Shamen” NPC/enemies from SMRPG though.

But I’m talking about the characters. Nintendo has been and always will reference music all the time. What’s really going to be an eye opener is reintroducing characters, whether it’s a cameo or a minior roll in the games, or even better having said character playable.

Times like this I still questioned why Nintendo never bother to buy off Geno and/or Mallow from Square. It’s not like those guys are going to do anything with them anytime soon…or ever. When was the last time Square even reference anything Super Mario RPG related outside of the Super Mario franchise?

While it’s probably not what you had in mind, Fortune Street for the Wii has a remix of the Mushroom Kingdom Music. So I wouldn’t say it’s COMPLETLY forgotten.

Also, great pixel work. I’d say the only bad thing is, is that if you didn’t say anything I would have absolutely NO idea this was from Mario RPG, but I guess it’s because it doesn’t really have an iconic style.

Maybe the majority voices of from fans who wanted another SMRPG or a remake wasn’t loud enough in demand, or maybe not. Whichever the case, Nintendo and Square should not be this dense. Lots of people love this game and there are some who practically worship this masterpiece that was crafted by the gods with their barehands of awesome sauce. I’m not kidding.

I don’t know how it is in this present time, but if neither company doesn’t want to knowledge this game’s characters after all these years, then that should be evidence enough to reveal how little they care.

Yeah, it’s a shame that SMRPG never got a proper sequel like the other RPG Mario titles, (the Paper series, and M&L series) but I guess that does help it stand out as a unique game. (Still would’ve been nice to see some of it’s memorable characters or NPCs return.)

Worst yet, as I said Square/Enix did team up with Nintendo to make “Mario Hoops,” (DS) and “Mario Sports Mix” (Wii) both games were a good oppertunity to have a SMRPG character return as a hidden character, but none of them did. (Instead they just had generic F.F. characters.)

Only nods to SMRPG I can think of are “Bowser’s Magma Mountain” in the first “Mario Party” game has a brief musical cue to “Bowser’s Keep” in it, the game “Fortune Street” reuses/orchistrates the “Mushroom Kingdom town” theme, and Princess Peach’s frying pan attack in the SSB series might be a nod to SMRPG, ‘cause the frying pan was her most powerful weapon.
(Unless it’s a reference to her role in “Chef,” in “Game & Watch Gallery 2 & 4.”)

And of course Geno’s cameo and some musical themes in the first “Mario & Luigi” game (“Supstar Saga”) are nods to SMRPG. Also, some events/features in the first “Paper Mario” (like the parade ending sequence) are also similar to SMRPG.

Cute. :)

Y’know, I hope the upcoming “Paper Mario meets Mario & Luigi RPG” game has at least one nod to SMRPG in it. (Perhaps another Geno doll/puppet cameo?)
